how can i do this econ 7 panel heater + timer

can i do this

i have a storage heater in the hall that i wont be using due to costs

i was thinking a small panel heater on for 2-3 hrs before we get up would knock the chill off , i could wire a panel heater into the existing socket no bother , but then it would be on all night , if the heater had a timer it would need resetting every time the econ 7 turns off

what can i use thats got a timer that remembers the setting with no power

If it will take the current most central heating timers have a built in rechargable battery to keep the time and program during power cuts.

You can get plug in digital timers that have batteries. We used to run one to turn on Xmas lights

Just checked the Screwfix one and it's 2400W

I've used one on Xmas Day before to start the oven early in the morning when we had a big gammon joint that needed 6+ hours to cook

eh what ,are you saying it wont work....

plan was econ 7 comes on say 12-7am ....leave heater on but plugged in thru gadget , wire becomes live at 12 but gadget say turns heater on at 5am ?

The Greenbrook T205-SCR internal backup battery spec is: fully charged after 14 hours, and 700 hours backup of the timer settings with no power. The Economy 7 duty cycle should be plenty to keep the battery charged. Just connect the supply lines to the mains via a 13A plug for a few hours, make the necessary timer settings then disconnect and wire it into the fused spur box. It will retain the settings during the wiring changeover process, and spare the need to lie on the floor with the manual and a magnifying glass to set the timer!!

Wouldn't just turning down the input of the storage heater achieve the same thing? So it stocked up with only the same amount of kWh that you expect the panel heater to use...?

not really , its on all night when we dont need it , then cold mid day , i think a small panel heater on for a hour or two would take the chill off in the coldest months , cant really justify what the storage heater costs to have on

Yea, but resistive electrical heating is same same. If you put xkwh into a storage heater, will a panel heater on for the same xkWh give you any more comfort?

Not trying to be antagonistic, just maybe save you buying another heater

Doesn't your storage heater have an adjustable "input" knob? Any milage in (once it's winter) turning it to the minimum comfortable setting and seeing how many kWh it's using? At least your storage heater will give a bit of background heat later in the day too.

Or you could consider combining ideas and leaving the storage heater on full whack but modulating it's input with a timer like you were considering with the panel heater. Would push the heating time closer to when you get up, not midnight.

it does have a knob yes ...not as controllable as you would hope , it has 1-7 but realistly its luke warm or full rage

take the cover off and look inside at the snail cam that moves the boost flap and make sure its working , you have to remember to shut the boost control every night , if you can do that eco7 isnt that bad , no heating is cheap these days , but the trick with eco7 is to have a routine , and make sure the snail cams are adjusted , a drop of spray high temp lube on the bushes helps too , I use rs stuff that I used to use on the iris groups on intelligent lights and it does well.

The heat goes into the bricks but the bricks are in the room. A heater like the above has some advantages over a storage heater, it will cost less to buy, will heat the air in a room faster and will take up less space. But it won't give you more kWh in your room for less money. As you already have a storage heater there that works and you'll have to pay to change, I'd work with what you have.

The exception to this might be if you've a poorly insulated space that you want to heat the air up in quickly but only for a short period. A good example would be one of those lean to bathrooms attached to the back of Victorian terraced houses that are effectively outside of the heated envelope and always freezing. In this case a short blast from a powerful fan heater while using it will probably be cheaper than trying to keep it ticking over all day with a storage heater. Condensation nightmare though!

Maybe your hallway is a bit like that?
