How are you cooling the house down?

Bedroom was 43 when I got back this evening.

All windows open ( at risk of very big spiders getting in, I live in the fields and there's big spiders round here. I don't like spiders!!!!)

Fans on at the landing and in all upstairs bedrooms. Just about bearable now

Insulation.
I've noticed the workshop is lovely and cool the past couple of days. The insulation keeps the lower overnight temperature in there for hours.
Of course, once the door's opened to the outside area, the hot air starts coming in and displacing the cooler stuff, and I need the door open if I'm welding.
I'm seriously thinking of moving an armchair into the workshop and keeping the doors firmly shut all day.

A few years a go I fitted Air-con to my bedroom - a proper LG split unit and it is fantastic. Only problem is the office at work does not have air-con and so you get up lovely and cool then go and roast for the day.

Aircon is the only thing that works for me, at the moment I have two of the portable machines but as I'm renovating and extending the house I'm going to fit inverter split units that can provide cheap heat in the cooler months.

Move to Scotland. It was cold and wet over the weekend while the rest of the country had some of the hottest days of the year. Had to have the heating on Saturday.

when we built the house, I added a 1m overhang on the roof, in summer it keeps the sun off the windows, in winter when the sun is lower it lets the sun in, the bungalow faces due south.

seems to keep the temperatures reasonable.

Keep doors and windows shut until room temperatures rise to, or just below, the outside air temp. Gives the benefits of cooler rooms, for a while.

Covering a roof with solar panels makes quite a difference to loft temps.

Today, it's 43 deg C in the shade, and closer to 50 in direct sun.
We've got aircon, throughout the lower part of the house, not using the upstairs yet.
But, I've just ordered some aircon for the workshop, it's about 35 in there at the moment

We've also got two extreme major fires raging in Portugal, one has killed 62 people in their cars trying to escape. It just swept across the road, they didn't stand a chance.
France and Spain have sent in air support to try and help, but they've over 1100 fire fighters on the bigger one, and 500 on the slightly smaller one
I feel sorry for the firefighters, the heat they are enduring is unimaginable.

The Bombeiros (firemen) now suspect the major starting point for the fires was an act of arson- the dry lightning strikes happened later and exacerbated the problem.
I know the area, much thicker tree cover than down here in the south, easy to imagine the power of the fire. Drone pictures showed what appeared to be molten aluminium running out from under the steel structure of cars. As if mad religious/political deliberate terrorism wasn't bad enough. The idea that someone would do this for fun is truly horrifying.

We live in an old stone cottage, the walls are vary between 2ft and 3ft thick, it's lovely and cool in here.

You just hang wet towels, sheets or blankets, bottoms in water, and a fan behind them. Basically you've created an evaporative cooler. The air flows through the blankets causing the water to evaporate, the evaporation is an endo thermic change which results in cooling.

There has been a suggestion that the fire are being started deliberately, in order to ensure the European money keeps flowing in to the pockets of "The Families"... If you catch my drift
