Yes, the Ghost shares 20% of platform components with the 7 series, that and a steel body/chassis allow it to be priced lower to compete with S class Mercs etc.

The Phantom however is an entirely special car. I had never even thought about Rollers before the new Phantom but there is something about it's brutal and uncompromising lines which I find seductive. But then I don't like Ferrari's except for the F40, 250 GTO, 330P4, 288 GTO and the 328 GTB QV, so my taste is a bit perverse !

Did anyone see the program thats been on bbc4 a few times now called rolls royce in india ? It was about extremely wealthy indian royalty commissioning rolls to be built for their own requirements , eg tiger hunting , transporting the local cricket team , etc This was all pre world war two of course, to me this was the golden age of rolls royce, you bought a car from them minus the body and interior and had a coach builder do the rest. One was said to have travelled 800+ miles on extremely rough roads with no work being needed, the bonnet wasn't opened once.

I read somewhere they had ally honeycomb floors and naturally thought they had ally bodies to match but a plastic roof and main structure with carbon everything else

Nice link, thanks for posting. My grandad was an engineer at the RR factory somewhere in the west country (memory's failing), but I know he played a part in the design of Concordes engines, I used to pinch small jet engine turbines from his shed that we're lying around.

It is a great video, the system they have for dipping and priming the bare bodies in the huge tank was impressive. I don't know who can afford such cars in this day and age though, but then again the recession is mainly for the little people isn't it ?

The dip process they sent the body in White through isn't really all that special, BMW probably use the exact process for all their vehicles. It's a standard process all manufacturers use to clean the bodies, even the transit goes through the same thing, it just doesnt flip during the process. The process may slightly change but the 7 dips and e-coat is essential to clean and protect the body prior to paint.

Did amuse me about the pin stripe guy too. Taking a month to assemble the car I expect they only need 1 person.

I believe the only worker taken on in the new triumph factory from the old meridan works was the chap who did the pinstriping on the petrol tanks. I have never tried it but can it be all that difficult ? I'd love to try it for myself and see.

He will have almost certainly retired by now, given that Triumph Hinckley started production in the early 90's ! Most sign writers can hand line so I reckon the skill is not as rare as it's being made out.

I have an aunty who lives somewhere around Kenilworth, I recall as a kid (late 70s?) going to visit her and being taken to the Stratford-on-Avon motor museum where they had a mustard-coloured 1920s Rolls that had been brought back from India having been owned by the Maharajah of somewhere-or-other. It had steering headlamps... you know, the thing that Citroen brag about...
The museum even offered a white-metal kit to build a model of the car, I remember my dad saying the kit was so expensive he could have bought us a car to drive home in for the money!

I read a magazine article some years ago that was about a visit to the Lamborghini factory when the Countach was still in production. The Countach used a box-steel spaceframe, so by the time the welders had finished it was all sorts of shapes but straight.
There was a pic of five or six burly Italians with scaffold poles through the frame, twisting the ends in opposite directions to get it right
