Household appliances !!

A few months ago my wife replaced HER appliances, dryer, washing machine, dish washer etc.

All fine, she's happy (very important)

Now I do not use these things (full of spiders and such)

But she went away for a few weeks so I would have to use them !

My wife said to me "Do you want me to show you how to use them. I said no I can handle it !

Well these appliances have symbols instead of numbers, letters and such.
Now I consider myself an intelligent person and able to work out most things.
These symbols had me stumped. They must have been designed by women in some secret symbol language of there own!!
They complain when a man does not use these things but when a man does not know how to operate them well you are in a no win situation really.

I searched and searched looking for the manuals for them, filing cabinet, desk draws, so on and so on.
Had to eventually ring her to ask for help!!!!!!!!
Guess where she put the manuals.........In the cupboard that she stores the tupperware, which I NEVER open under any circumstances.

Anyone else have problems with these symbols or is it just me ?

If it doesn't show it doesn't ironed, if it does show it doesn't need ironing anyway and requires a No4 wash. Full Stop.

My washing machine has a drawer for powder & liquid, fill these appropiately and if the machine wants to use them it will.

I did try the iron once, but it just sits there, I thought they were supposed to move around?

It is a big usability problem having images instead of words. Means you need to learn the functions rather than have them halfway intuitive.

On the web it's known as "mystery meat" navigation, the designers going for pretty, and deciding that people will be willing to learn their site rather than just being able to use it.

Welders are doing it too - amp dials styled to be pleasing to the eye rather than having an obvious indication of amps.

And Microsoft! Geez- don't upgrade to office 2008! If you do, click on a random logo somewhere for the tools you might want to use.

Wouldn't be so bad if a few hundred images were standardised, in the same way as we've standardised language a bit, but they all have to be different because of copyright! Madness.

I agree with rtbcomp.

fill the drawer with the stuff and select number 4/D or whatever and press go.
Clean clothes a couple of pints later

This is the batchelor wash setting and the only one that is needed in my opinion except for dirty oily overalls that seen to prefer number 2 or this could be the extra pint's that you can drink 'cause it takes longer
All the others are just a marketing ploy just like 6 speed gearboxes and 20 million Shatallite channels.

All you really need is is a couple of switched for the power/cleaning settings and a know for the spin speed.

Now where have I seen settings like that before?

My Dad used to design control systems for tanks, everything inc weapon control, which had to use icons/symbols because not all troops in the export market army could read...

Also they probs do it to internationalise things. The ones on my camera totally fox me.

Irons, had one for 13 yrs unused, it was bust by the time I came to take it out the box & use it....
Dishwashers - one-pan cooking when she's away, though I know one setting on it. Also useful for cleaning alloy parts in...
Clueless about the washing machine though.

Update
OK... I have the dishwasher chockers (mates came around for BBQ)
We managed to fill it with water, what a job getting the garden hose inside and trying to fill it with the dishwasher door open.
Might have to put a hole in the top of machine to fill it easily

Placed a bar of soap inside and quickly closed the door. Got it started all was good. Seemed to go through all functions.

My mate said that when it has stopped that I will have to "empty" it !!!!!

But for the life of me I cannot find the "Empty" button

Anyone got any clues as to where I can find the EMPTY button

It is supposed to be FULLY AUTOMATIC !

Yes have tried that, no water in it just the dishes
Thought it was to be able to Empty the dishes as well

As for washing machines i learned long ago to put everything in a 40 degree wash. i have no pure wool or silk (silk!!!!) so its all cotton based or manmade fibres, easy to wash.

Bunch of Luddites! You really should take the time to learn how to use these modern contraptions. It's the 21st century, labour saving devices are the way forward...

Take the oven for example. Excellent device for the preheating of smallish castings. To avoid having to clean the oven afterwoods (or risk a bollocking/funny tasting food when she gets home) stick the cylinderhead (or whatever) in the dishwasher first- excellent parts washer and you can have a beer while it does it's thing

I worked on a ranch.
When we needed to clean things during an overhaul.
We used an old dishwasher outdoors, with diesel fuel in it and a filter or two.
The hot diesel worked great.
If you use your wife's dishwasher you may need to take one of these with every meal.
