House gas

This house has gas pipe near the shed. Can I get the gas plumbed out into the shed in such a way, correct safety bits etc, done by a qualified person.. So that I can connect a burner for heating stuff?

Otherwise we are not using the gas. Paying the service charge. Expensive to get the meter removed so makes sense to use it instead of propane bottles.

Yeah not a problem, there is some building regs issues with energy's efficiency but for what you are doing id just do it.

It depends on what you want to use to do the heating. If you want to connect a portable appliance to mains gas then that would be illegal unless it was designed specifically for it (e.g. natural gas barbecue) but it shouldn’t be inside. Probably best avoided. Sorry keep editing this.

I wont be messing around with the mains gas pipe myself. It would need to be extended with the correct safety bits so that I could connect a burner to that. Along the lines of a school science lab would have natural gas taps on every bench for connecting small bunsen burners to - but bigger.

I dont have a burner. From this thread and a quick read, its not an easy/sensible/cheap thing to do.

Surely one of those old style gas fires that people stood in old fireplaces and plumbed into the gas mains would work. Would need a flue to outside obviously. My house still has the pipes just folded under the floorboards.

Thing with gas, like a lot of other highly regulated things is it’s actually got little to do with what would work. Regulations and standards get tighter as accidents happen so what’s legally possible gets less and less over time.

Nothing wrong with getting a pipe and a burner connected, as long as pipe into garage is to regulation and burner location instalation meets with its instalation requirements.

Transition fittings either end, underground pe pipe to shed.

I'd just go back in the house to warm my pasties. If you don't use any gas and still pay standing charge contact your supplier and tell them you want to swap to a zero standing charge tariff and give them your reason.

Typical new heat treatment installation for metalworking nowadays in a college: gas solenoid valve, CO detector, interlinked LEV (hearth etc won’t run w/o extract), iron pipes (copper not allowed), metal clad switchgear... not sure what applies in a domestic setting.

Sounds more like he wants to set up a science lab, rather than sitting by a fire warming up his pasties, best solution is to get a qualified Gas Fitter around to give you a quote, as he will be up to date on the regs.

One of the science labs at my school was refitted shortly before I left, I remember the physics teacher moaning that the main stopcock at the front of the room was replaced with a key switch solenoid thing that wouldn't actually open the valve for about twenty minutes after turning the key. It sounded a little alarm too iirc, someone who's never set foot in a lab probably felt it safer. I assume that's just some strict regulation for schools but there must be a way to do it at home.

if its a wood shed you have to follow certain regs so the unit is safe to be used in there without setting fire in there

otherwise you can have a hob,oven and heater connected into it

i tend to like the cast iron wall heaters as this can also be used in there
