Hotpoint Aquarius TDL52 tumble dryer fault

We have the above tumble dryer, it will be just over 3 years old. It has become really inefficient - it takes at least twice as long to dry a load as it would 6 months ago.

It's cleaned out and the fluff filters are clear - is there anything to look for before I have to bite the bullet and buy a new one?

Most likely the element on the way out, not too dear on espares, fairly easy job to do.

Have you taken it apart, and checked for any blockages, vent pipe completely clear, vent clear, air inlet all clear.

If that's all in order check see how many amps it's pulling when it's on full and check against plate, for it to be that poor something is up

Another possibility is a failed thermal switch (there could be more than one). Again cheap as chips and easy to replace. There's nowt to vented driers.

Some have a thermal cutout too which is resettable, I remember fixing our Bosch one like that, it's also had a new element but it is 18yrs old. It's not used everyday though.

It's the first thing that comes up when you Google the model number but i can't see it listed anywhere...was hoping i might get a free exchange

Contact the customer services ..you might get it replaced i think there was a stink about it last year and you could type your serial number in to check it out.

They were previously offering really cheap upgrades - may be worth a try as my parents got an upgraded new dryer for £60

Ours has 2 elements, full heat and half heat...
Started to take twice as long to dry stuff.

Bought one from eBay iirc and swapped it. Worked perfectly again after that.

Our Indesit has two thermal trips at different temperatures, one resets itself if tripped and the other is a safety that needs the cover taking off to reset. There's no reset button just a small hole in the back of the sensor to reset it.

If it has been running with blocked fluff filters the fluff can build up in other places like the condenser. Some of them have thermal fuses near the elements that blow if the elements get too hot, usually caused by a fluff blockage.

I bought a non runner for £2 & the previous owner never cleaned it, there was fluff everywhere! I cleaned it out, replaced a fuse & my mum has been using it now for 18 months!

Looks like i'll spend Friday evening with it to see if i can suss the problem.

So baring anything obviously failed inside, how do I go about narrowing down the fault?

i belive the restable ones are few and far between these days there auto reseting mostly in the newer ones a bio what ever it is in the power cable to the heating unit

cheak the front of the mechine there on the front a half temp button sorry for saying this but

how wet is the clothes coming out of the washing mechine ? changed the washing mechine ?

cheak from the filter to the exit out the back is clean does not need to be blocked lots of fluf through the exit point makes ours take way longer if it clean its very noticeable the extra time clean all the fluf out so you can see just the plastic tube and down from the filter to the tube clean this so theirs no fluf

and your vent out the wall

as you prob know from now on if you remove the top and its still pluged in BE CAREFULL but cheak the tub is turning/ no sliping

then cheak you have power to the elements normaly 1e sometimes 2 if they have power when on buying a element should help

OH DID I SAY BE CAREFULL while playing around in there and get a shock you could get cought and not be able to remove your arm or get a shock and quick remove your arm and catch it on a sharp edge all edges on the inside of a mechine are very sharp dont ask me how i know

I had a similar situation a while back, the landlord had fitted the hose between the dryer and wall outlet without shortening it, leaving a loop about 5 foot long. When I had a poke around I found it was partly blocked with fluff and about a half pint of water. So I unblocked and shortened that so there was just enough hose to be able to move the dryer and be able to fit the hose. Cleaned all the fluff out of the wall outlet as well, 100% improvement.

Looks like most of the parts are similar to our Indesit, quite simple machines if that’s the case. If the element is not getting power the small hole in the centre rear poked with a blunt instrument might solve the problem if it has one. It’s designed to stay tripped if the temperature rises to prevent fire from a fluff blockage. £30 for that is p take revenue grabbing if it’s resettable. I wonder how many machines have been cleaned out and reset then the customer charged for parts?

leave it empty and put it on low, stick your hand in front of the vent and see how much airflow there is and how hot it is

then do the same on high, see if it's any hotter

might be worth giving it a few min after you put it on so it has a chance to warm up

if airflow is ok it must be a heater problem

check the elements with a meter, see if they're getting power

I was able to check the fuses on mine with a multimeter & temporarily bridged the faulty one out to confirm it was the problem. A new thermal fuse was very cheap on ebay, around £5 I think.
