Hot Tub running costs

Yeh from what I’ve read, it costs a huge amount to heat it up bit then when it’s up to temp just a few quid a day to keep it there, maybe that’s where they’re going wrong, they’re not meant to be switched off between uses.

Not sure how they were using it other than every day after work when they first got it !

A six seater hot tub will be around 1250 litres fill, so about £3 for the water, then about 50kWh (~£25) to get it to temperature. The lids are extremely well insulated. The hot tub water temp can be at 38degC, yet there will still be frost on the top of the lid after a clear night. The cost is maybe £2 per day to keep warm with the lid on, but using it can drop the temperature quite quickly, especially after a few jars have been imbibed, the footie gets watched, and the lid doesn't get put back on till the morning. If the lid leaks and rainwater gets in, it will all have to be heated to temp. Then there's the pool chemicals! Actually, the cost of those isn't too bad, considering.

I can believe that, there is a very big hot tub at a place where we are working, power has been off for two days and the thing is still up to temperature.

Wow, yes I‘ll need to look into the R value of the one she’s looking at, though it was a very expensive one when it was new, though fancy coloured lights doesn’t necessarily mean it has top insulation.

Not sure Tom, worth looking into, perhaps extra spray on insulation would be possible though I’d like to think that a 2019 tub from a quality manufacturer would have done this already, as long as you don’t block off component access I don’t see why it wouldn’t be possible. I think though that having a good well fitting insulated cover is the best way to spend cash on if upgrading.

You probably could add removable insulation to it but permanent would most likely A invalidate the manufacturer guarantee, and B make it a complete nob to fix if it went wrong!

I’ve made a couple of wood burners to an American design,using a marine grade aluminium,the customer built everything else himself,he had an endless supply of oak,I joined him in it at his 40th ,it was a great experience,as a very occasional event,so for him a cheap way,could you adopt that style of tub?
I’ve got the drawings if you’d like them.

One of my first "interesting" jobs when I started out in the hiab game was reversing my old 8 wheeler hiab wagon onto Patrington cricket pitch out near Spurn Point to load a hot tub that I delivered to Hedon, a few miles west.

Aside from the hilarious chaos that ensued when 22 tons of wagon got stuck on the pitch , the guy who was selling it it told me that it seemed a nice idea but who wants to get out of a hot tub into typically dismal British weather? Less than 6 months after craning it into a back garden in Hedon, (and at this point I openly admit that I always thought Hedon was the home of Heddonism ), out it came and the seller told me the same thing as the man he bought it from.

It then went to Gilberdyke, a few miles west of Hull, and lasted another 6 months before I moved it yet again to the by now familiar story...

Thanks for the offer but unfortunately I have far too many projects on the go at the moment, in fact I’m not even quite sure where to begin them all, hopefully one day they’ll all be done and I can retire to my workshop and do stuff I want to do

We've an inflatable Lay-Z-Spa, bought on special at B&Q at SWMBO's insistence. The youngest and her mates used it for I guess a year. SWMBO was religious about the chemicals etc. 1st winter she drained it and packed it away.

Then it got forgotten and has sat there, full and now doubt stagnating for a couple of years.

The cat likes it, it's one big Summer heart store.
