Hot Tub running costs

Thanks for your replies guys, with regards to the boat, unfortunatelly it’s not what you think, I can’t sleep in it, it’s only a wee speedboat with a 75hp outboard and will be trailered home after use … though a 28 ft Bayliner with an underfloor cabin would be very nice!
So it sounds like somewhere around £120 per month at worst case scenario would be in the ballpark to keep SWMBO happy , it would only be used in the summer months then drained down and winterised, we just don’t have the weather up here to make winter use viable.
No water meters in Scotland it’s included as a fixed rate in our council tax, water is not something we’re short of!

I stayed at a lodge in the middle of nowhere recently and it had an outside bath, batch was on an outside wall of the hut thing with taps coming out through the wall

not really sexy but my gf and I quite enjoyed it in a nice hot outside bath outside in the rain


ok it wastes water.... but you only fill it when you need it? because I'm assuming the vast number of people with hot tubs hardly ever use them?

My wife has been wanting a hot tub for quite a while now and I’ve always used the electricity costs to run it as an excuse not to get one.
However I’ve just bought a boat which has running costs associated with it so I’ve been told …. Fair point!
The one she’s got her eye on is a fraction of the cost of a new one, 2019, 6 seat “Oasis” with minimal use, when I look online it seems a rough running cost of £1.35 per day is about normal. But I‘m not sure if the retailers are being economical with the truth on that point.
So if you have one I’d like to know how much are you paying per month on electricity to have it running.
I’m aware that insulation plays a big factor in running costs.

as above a fortune . work it out yourself . how many kw is it and whats your kwh rate most are 6 kw

40 amp supply I think, and 3kw to heat, takes a lot to heat it up but then when it’s fitted with the cover when not in use then doesn’t need much power to keep it to temperature, other than when in use, the pumps use a lot of power when running.

Youll need to site it so you can test run the outboard in it.obviously when the wife is out!

We've had ours for almost 8 years now, ours is a 6 person rigid one not inflatable, holds about 1100lt. At current electricity prices costs about £14 to heat from cold, we generally use it 6-8 hrs a month and electricity cost would be about £2.50 a day at current prices, chemicals do have a cost but not much.

That cost is for it being on all year round, it costs slightly more during the winter as it drops temp more, less through Summer but averages out to £2.50

No, you DO have the weather. Christmas day, snow on the ground, sitting in the hot tub with a cool beer!! Perfect.

I like your thought.
Last winter we didn’t have 1 day with snow on the ground which lay for more than an hour, I took my son up to loch Braden as he was 7 years old and had never been able to build a snowman, 15 miles inland up in the hills it’s a different story he got to build his first snowman. On the West coast where we live we rarely see snow, but yeh I can see where you’re coming from on a frosty day.

Mrs DomDom has a Coast Spa one, rigid with 4 seats etc. I drained it and turned it off because it was using about 18 units a day which comes to £5.40 ish.

This is with a well insulated lid etc. Utterly ridiculous running cost. I’m now looking into replacing a 5kw heater with an air source heat pump. They seem to be about 1kw/h consumed but they put 3 times this into the water.

Friends had a large hot-tub and were shocked at the first electricity bill after installation - £800+. Obviously that included their normal usage as well but they have massively cut back on hot-tub usage

Yeh from what I’ve read, it costs a huge amount to heat it up bit then when it’s up to temp just a few quid a day to keep it there, maybe that’s where they’re going wrong, they’re not meant to be switched off between uses.

Alternatively, he could keep the boat and get rid of the wife - it will still work out cheaper.

Few of our neighbours have them, 1 has a 2 seater, reckons it was about £1 a day. Other lad said his 3 seater one (quite a bit newer) said about £70 a month. Then the price for electricity went through the roof and is contemplating turning it off for the summer.
