Hot Tub running costs

My wife has been wanting a hot tub for quite a while now and I’ve always used the electricity costs to run it as an excuse not to get one.
However I’ve just bought a boat which has running costs associated with it so I’ve been told …. Fair point!
The one she’s got her eye on is a fraction of the cost of a new one, 2019, 6 seat “Oasis” with minimal use, when I look online it seems a rough running cost of £1.35 per day is about normal. But I‘m not sure if the retailers are being economical with the truth on that point.
So if you have one I’d like to know how much are you paying per month on electricity to have it running.
I’m aware that insulation plays a big factor in running costs.

Fill a hot tub with Evian Water , sit in it while eating caviar , drinking champagne and getting an indian head massage from a thai hooker , and it still wont come close to the cost of owning a boat .
Your never going to win , just give in gracefully and smile when the leccy bill comes in ,,, never know you may enjoy it , and thats more than can be said about boat owning most of the time .

I did some work for a large household with one a few weeks ago, the lady of the house asked me why her leccy bill was so much. I put an energy monitor on the suspect and went back a week later to check on it £28 to run it for a week
She very quickly said, well we will keep that between ourselves, take the meter off it before my husband comes home!

Not so much the boat, but the costs of keeping it. Marina..ouch! Mud berth, err tides. I have a couple of trail/sail boats. So only cost when I use them and that isn't much. Cost of diesel is making a dent..

Hot tubs, I had a book from the US; Santa Barbara Hot Tub book. This was back in '80.. Of course, heating was by gas, and cheap for the big wooden ones they had then, based on the water tanks on towers.
Now, much smaller and better insulated, but still.. heating with lecky has to be a bit pricey now.

But, having bought a boat, your position on 'discussion' re the hot tub is the equivalent to shooting yourself in the foot. Gonna hurt.

if you want it cheaper burn wood if you have alot of it

at initial start up via a boiler

solar will keep it warm in summer but is it needed unless its under cover which it will be outside you need insulation covers

note here a house can have r28 insulation but a hot tub will be less looking at r8 or r12 insulation

however to run it cheaper is via wood but also another type of build

i mate has just got an inflateable one. it has a 2KW heater and the destructions state its 18 hours to heat it up. so 36kWh to heat. since Electrickery is at approx 30p a unit that .3 x 36 to heat it up or £10 then there will be running cost on to for howerver you use it say another £3 per use. so if its used at the weekend twice its likey to be getting on for £50 per month

I suspect the available one already has an electric heater, so wood will be a major mod.

I stayed at a lodge in the middle of nowhere recently and it had an outside bath, batch was on an outside wall of the hut thing with taps coming out through the wall

not really sexy but my gf and I quite enjoyed it in a nice hot outside bath outside in the rain


ok it wastes water.... but you only fill it when you need it? because I'm assuming the vast number of people with hot tubs hardly ever use them?

there normaly left on and need to have chemical in the water to keep it pure

A six seater hot tub will be around 1250 litres fill, so about £3 for the water, then about 50kWh (~£25) to get it to temperature. The lids are extremely well insulated. The hot tub water temp can be at 38degC, yet there will still be frost on the top of the lid after a clear night. The cost is maybe £2 per day to keep warm with the lid on, but using it can drop the temperature quite quickly, especially after a few jars have been imbibed, the footie gets watched, and the lid doesn't get put back on till the morning. If the lid leaks and rainwater gets in, it will all have to be heated to temp. Then there's the pool chemicals! Actually, the cost of those isn't too bad, considering.

I was using a hose pipe all day today. Had about 75 ft run. The water was almost too hot coming out so use hosepipe and a small pump.

Thanks for your replies guys, with regards to the boat, unfortunatelly it’s not what you think, I can’t sleep in it, it’s only a wee speedboat with a 75hp outboard and will be trailered home after use … though a 28 ft Bayliner with an underfloor cabin would be very nice!
So it sounds like somewhere around £120 per month at worst case scenario would be in the ballpark to keep SWMBO happy , it would only be used in the summer months then drained down and winterised, we just don’t have the weather up here to make winter use viable.
No water meters in Scotland it’s included as a fixed rate in our council tax, water is not something we’re short of!

there a fad for most folk then dont use and get rid . they became popular near us 20 years ago because footballers on wynyard estate were all getting them so the sheep followed ive wired up about 10 for diffrent folk
