To be honest i dont mind doing it the hard way because it will help build me up abit. Its just my hearing and eyes im going to worry about because my skin will heal but my eyes and ears wont!

im 16 and hopefully i have got a long career in engineering a head of me, so i need both of those senses.

Get an air hammer. I once did a boiler on an old steam engine. Three of us, using 3/4" rivets . One holding the dolly and one hammering and I forget what the third was doing, probably minding the fire and keeping the rivets coming. You will take forever doing it manually. If you do try it that way, don't be a hero and get a huge sledge hammer. Ten minutes with the damn thing and you won't be able to swing it properly. Get a smaller one that you can swing with confidence and you will get a lot more done. If you get an air hammer, ear defenders are essential. Your head will be ringing for days even with them, without them you'll be like something in a cartoon within minutes.

As above - no alternative but to get an air hammer. If the client refuses they'll soon change their mind when they see how much work you're getting done.

Done a fair bit of rivet setting over the years on chassis's and I can tell you now it's gonna take you a while and you will be knackered quite quickly , air hammer is the way

Thanks chaps i will pass the advice on to the customer, what is annoying is the customer knows that i can borrow a road compressor for free so it will be the hire of the airhose and hammer!!

You might struggle to find someone to hire you the propper rivet hammer, you need the right end for it as well, to suit the rivet head size....

due to the fact it is in a world heratige site and conservation area, the council have specified that it has got to be the same (down to the method of construction) as what was took away by pikeys last year!!

thats the "heritage" architects for you sitting in their offices coming up with daft ideas will they make you dress up in leather aprons , wear flannel shirts and flat caps while your weilding the sledges?

they suggested air hammers but the owners seem to think that it would be cheaper to use sledge hammers!!

youll be dead by 11am it was a special breed of man that built wrought iron structures with hand tools they were never "Huge" like poncy body builders but they had forearms like steel hawsers.

I can remember seeing some BBC drama when I was a kid and they were throwing red hot rivets to cthers with buckets and some poor lad got one in the chest.
Hell what a vivid memory, scared me to death. Even more when years later I realised that was how it was done.

Years ago I was in a place in Hatfield watching the guys riviting RSJ structures for aircraft jigs. Rivits were heated in a gas oven/kiln.Picked out with tongs, then thrown up around 20ft. The next guy picked them out of the air, with tongs, and placed them in the hole. Two other guys closed them up with a dolly and air hammer. I was there for over an hour, not one dropped.
Sledge hammer, no way.

There are some times when you have to tell people they are wrong. Apart from other considerations, air hammers are kinder to the general structure. I used to rivit up a/craft structures. Wielding a hammer would have severely damaged them. The rapid blows from a (small) air hammer set the rivit in a controlled manner.

Here is an up date: we got the coke forge lit and done three rivets in 15 minutes, he wasnt impressed and was told by the owner that we can all go home until he has sourced an air hammer and correct dollys. He should of listened to me!! so me and the lads went to the local pub, which happened to be a remote village pub, my favourite kind being 16. Thanks for the advice guys.

It sure is so much so that between 6 of us we spent £120 on drinks in the pub!
