Hot air / heat guns - are they all about the same?

For all I needed, I bought a cheapy Lidl corded one - perfectly adequate.

I can understand the need for hot work permits, but some of them do test my patience, I had to wait a couple of hours for the onsite fireman to turn up when I wanted drill one 20mm hole in a control panel, he filled in all the paperwork then stood there with a fire extinguisher while I drilled the hole, done in less than 30 seconds. Another place, the safety officer wanted to issue an hot work permit so we could weld a bracket inside a welding booth which has welding going on 24 hours a day so we waited until he went home before doing the job

I’ve got a lidl one this time around and it’s got a 4m thick cord as std. Impressive!!!
Over the years I’ve learned to put them down so it vents up to aid the cooling. My last one was an Aldi one bought in 2007!! On average I have them for around 15years without them burning out but I’ve known people to cook them in as little as 3months because they put them down on the sides. I’ve also got a 40yr black n decker one!!

Nothing wrong with the cheapy silverline heat guns. Mine have had a lot of abuse & I melted the first one.

Great for lighting charcoal, my first one I melted the steel end and element when a while hot lump fell in but would have happened to any.

Cordless ones, nice if thats what you need but dont be under the illusion they could have anywhere near the same power.

One day I intend to swap the power cord for a removable powercon connector as its a great annoyance for storage.

I have a steinel digital - very nice for dialling in the perfect temp for delicate stuff.
I wouldn't mind a cordless one for small heatshrinking jobs, but you need a mains one for anything serious.

Cordless ones are bought for convenience for shorter/lighter tasks generally, I'd have thought. Obviously wouldn't use one for stripping paint from a door, or suchlike.

Is a hot air gun and a heat gun the same thing? Genuine question.

Wonder if there’s a really toasty version for paint stripping or whatever vs a cooler one for heatshink?

Mine won’t do curtainside repair. Didn’t expect it to to be honest, but was just playing with it when it was new.

I think you can call them either - I certainly do. They are all just hairdryers on varying degrees of steroids
Some you can control the temp so just dial it down for heatshrink. Leister always was the big name for all the plastic welding, flooring and industrial stuff. Usually a big price tag too. I should think they would have something for curtainsides.

Tools and stuff did a good review on a few of the cordless ones, but they were all fairly anaemic - which is to be expected really.

Typical, the fan on mine packed up today though it has been slowing down and speeding up for a few weeks.Time for a new one I think.
