Hose clips Torque settings?

Without going into to much detail I am having to re write a Commissioning Spec for a Gas Fire Suppression and a High Speed Foam suppression system after an incident.


After the incident, a drain hose failed, drenching someone in foam, H&S have queried the “Torque setting” on Jubilee Hose clips.

Does any one Know, with a link what is the Torque setting for a 7mm Hex nut on a Hose clip?


It is a hydraulic rubber spec hose into a steel pipe.

The problem is they vary in quality from decent to appears to be made of metallic cheese

The metallic cheese being more common.


I would bin the jubilee clip and go for something a bit heavier duty as they you have reduced an unknown variable

The only problem I've had with Jubilee-type clips is when fastening a hose to a straight pipe. If the pipe has a barb then there's no problem.

I tighten them using a nut-spinner, I've stripped threads on cheap and nasty clips, but not decent ones.

Thank @WorkshopChris Looking now.

One site insists on Jubilee Clips, as part of the install specification. No I don't know why.

Almost all the suppression systems are installed by a reliable company, just that H&S have queried the torque settings.

So I am reviewing the commissioning specification.

Thats nice to know that i can inhale a jubliee clip with no adverse effects to my health

I allways use a clip driver on that type of clip, I hate it when I see other techs use screwdrivers, ARGH ------that then uks it up, for the rest of us who take the time to walk to the toolbox for the correct tool. also aclip driver is sort of self limiting as it starts to 'screw' up as it reaches the correct torque.

What is the problem with using a screwdriver. The manufacturer seems to thinks its OK, other wise they wouldn't have a slot to use one.

From my experience of trying to remove them, its not the using of a screwdriver that is the problem, its people using the wrong size screwdriver and it slipping and damaging the slot.

thats a bodge job imo and with most concientious techs, because of the grief it causes and it is very rare you can get straight on perfectly in line with the screw so the slot ends up forced open into a vee by using a screwdriver especially the wrong size, that then prevents the proper socket fitting !
I so often get my clip driver out and it wont fit because of this and then when you do manage to get it on, you cant then get the socket off again or it comes off the end of the clip driver and drops in the belly pan causing more time loss. ARGH
I usually get the clip and throw it as far as I can !!

I have 7mm clip driver, I agree what you say.

I have seperate 6-7-8-10 normal 150mm flexy drives in one box then also three different lengths of flex drivers up to a metre long, then in the other rally box I have one driver with the seperate 1/4 drive sockets clipped on a small rail on the side .
I am not saying I havnt used a screwdriver------ but hate it when I have to.

Also I love those little hooked tails that stick out from the slot when someone has bodged a clip with a screwdriver, then you have to force your hand or arm passed them in an engine bay and it come out bleeding !!

To my mind the slot is to wide so the screwdriver is only in contact on two diagonal contact points as opposed to parallel along the length of the slot.
A bit like the screw on a MCB it is neither suited to a Flat/ Philips or Posi but they will a turn it. You can now get a screwdriver just to fit the multipurpose screw head.

Blimey, I've got the proper driver and flat blades that fit the slot snugly and cause no damage and I'm happy to use either.

Having seen clip drivers from every tool supplier I always thought they'd be handy if doing a lot of clips in tight spots but not really necessary most of the time as I used 1/4 drive sockets.

Then I got one with a set of hose clamps and won't use anything else!
And of course got a second one for the workshop plus the smaller size...
And yes, screwdrivers are a terrible choice for this job.

my vauxhall zafira A mk1 not the set on fire one, thats the later zafira B model has the kind that you can only use a clip driver or socket on no screwdriver slots on them

Actually years ago before hose clips had hex drives maybe jubilee or terry used to have a tool that fitted the round od headed screw head, with a screw driver bridge in it to prevent the damage, it fitted exactly round the head and also fitted the slot exactly.
somewhere I still have it !
