Horse cart

a friend of mine has asked me to make him a horse cart ,anyone made one before on here and how did it turn out

Cost It out. Show him the listing. He may change his mind, saves you a job then.

That's a trotter cart in the photo.
Normally used by the types that race up and down the local bypass for cash stakes.
Budget for some brakes on it.
Also, put some uprisers on the front of the draw legs so if the harness snaps the front dont drop and dig into the road and flip it over.
If it's for a actuall friend rather than just for cash make a couple of break points in the rails so you (the emergency services) can take it apart with only an adjustable spanner when it's all twisted up in a ditch by the side of a busy road.
Contraptions like that one have given me a decent pay check over the years but also caused a lot of inconvenience to other road users and distress to members of the public and emergency services.

That's the problem with building stuff, Sometimes its cheaper & easier to buy something.

Built a bike stand & the time/cost wasn't really worth it tbh. But I had a bit of fun making it

You see a lot of those around the Isle of Axholme....near Doncaster.......racing side by side along narrow roads

Often see those in my neck of the woods, Usually two or three Yoofs seated on them going a real fair clip on the tarmac roads, you see the ponies and the trap tied to a lamp post while they go inside for meals etc. feel sorry for the ponies, its hard going on the feet and legs on hard surface at the speeds they go,

I dont get over emotional about it, I can accept that some people buy a horse like I would buy a welder, I pay for it to do a job and it's a tool.
But much like some people on here would hate to see a 1950's lathe in a scrap yard or a kemppi welder chucked in the mud on a site I feel like some things should be treated with respect.

I have made carts like this before but having been handed a firearm by a so19 guy and shot an injured horse in the face because "they haven't trained me for this" makes you realise that you are part of a chain that led to the events in the first place.
Bolt the arms on so it can be taken apart quickly and easily if needed.

My dad wanted one & when I priced up the steel, etc it was cheaper to buy one, never mind trying to source suitable wheels (commonly old spoked motorbike wheels) & suspension.

When he quit the pony driving he sold it on for a decent profit.

now and then on a sunday morning they block one lane on a carriageway and 2 of them race up the road mebbe about 40 travellers stood by watching . there's REAL; big money bet on them then plod comes along when its 2 late then politely ask them to move on. I don't think plod like hospital food or flossing there teeth through there bum

I've made quiet a few horse drawn items, but not made a Sulky.

I have made light duty general purpose 4 wheel wagons, a few two wheel general purpose carts a couple of what can only be described as single axle (multi train) boxed limbers, hand winch log forwarders and three agricultural forecarts…………….. and the only ones I made any kind of a profit on were the forecarts!


I am actually thinking of reintroducing the forecarts into my product line, and have in the last 12 months dropped almost £10k into developing forecart with a 12 volt electric driven hydraulic cat 1/2, 3pt linkage and ground speed PTO
