That was a horrible experience...

Just got back from installing this little gate up the road from me. First time of using resin...and it's a warm day.

Squeezed out about 20cm worth through the mixing nozzle onto some cardboard to be sure it's mixed. Came out watery at first then saw it come out grey & thought that looks mixed & it makes sense for it to be a mortar sort of colour.

Start squeezing into hole 1 when...mastic gun breaks. Got the sod to work again (ish) & got everything clamped in place. After about 5 mins took off mixing nozzle & squirted some out to compare colour & it came out kinda pink?! Now thinking what colour is this stuff meant to be when mixed & unsure if the gunk I've squirted was mixed or not?!

Hey ho, seems to have worked. Does the colour of this crap vary brand to brand?

I've used Rawl resin before, the hardner was black and when mixed was the same as your greeny grey colour.

I tend to use the Fischer stuff but there are a few different types, polyester, styrene and vinyl springs to mind depending on the substrate you are fixing into.

I don't know the resin answer, just wanted to say that I do like the detail on the right hand side of the gate where it clears the stone work.

We use most makes of chemical anchor and they come in all colours.

One tip is to store them upside down with the nozzle pointing downwards so the liquid resin sits at the top of the tube and not next to the nozzle.

When you first squeeze some out, do this without the nozzle on and squirt it onto some cardboard so you can see both the resin and hardener coming out, as it ages the hardener becomes sort of crispy, then mix it on the cardboard and forse it into the hole, then fit the mixing nozzle.

Another vote for thé Fisher stuff, Always used Hilti before, Fisher was à lot cheaper and worked just as well. Hung all our window shutters hinges with it... Only had bother with one, think it wasn't mixed enough.. thé rest were fine..

Most of the DIY tubes have two bags in the tube, one each of resin and hardener. The first squeeze is usually a bit hit & miss as they start flowing. Others, like Wurth, use co-axial pistons which come out more evenly, so waste less. But you do need a special pistol. They also seal a bit better between jobs.

Firstly I have learnt these things

Leave well alone for the full cure time, go take a lunch break away from the job, anything g just done put weight on or tighten too soon

Check out the sample bit before you tighten

Carry a box of nozzles

Make certain hole is realy clear of dust (I blow down a tube)an unused nozzle will work at a push

Buy the very best mastic guns and carry a spare

If it's wet make sure it says the stuff you use us compliant for wet weather

Not all cure times are equal so read the info

Also most say to waste the first 3 squirts (on he 2 bag type tubes) as it doesn't mix enough. I've started putting the studs straight into it as I've had it go off in the first cure time and had to redrill.

to mask finish best bet is fill 7/8 full leaving gap at front ,when set make another mix on card then using ground down brick dust,or what ever you are fixing to,mix in to colour mix and fill to front.you will need more dust than you realise generally!

Not especially as most manufacturers do a range which includes brickwork, its more about strength and drying times these days as some say set in 5 minutes and still take a full 24 hours to properly cure.

Just to clarify, I meant for strength, not for a colour match to the brick, but I like the tip anyway Arther!

They recommend Polysester Resin for brick, either FIP or FIS/P.

What you need to be careful of is the block or brick is not in any way hollow as you then need sleaves. It's very uncommon here (sometimes crops up on modern estates) but quite prevalent in the south.

If your drilling the correct size you should only end up with a tiny amount around your stud etc. But rarely is this point going to be seen.
