Hi . Looking for some advice. I want a metal cutting band saw, they all look the same, 6x4 different brands but Iam sure made by same company, except one. Powercut 135 cuts 150x 185. Ive looked it up on google, no info. just the name of the crowd that are selling it. I like the bigger cut. Anyone know about it or any help. Malcolm.

I've got the Sealey 6x4 one, kindly sold to me by Paul G on here. They are all the same, and often take a little fettling to get a really good straight cut, so I'm told. Paul had already sorted this out on mine, and added coolant to it. You do just set it going and it sorts itself out. Only time it needs a little supervision is when cutting through thin vertical sections, needs a little pressure holding off.
Not sure I follow your post. There are all kinds of horizontal bandsaws out there - they are not all the same at all - different capacities / quality / features etc.
There are a lot of 'brands' of what is basically that same 6 x 4 saw, if that's what you mean, but you also have many more options which are not generic copies of that.
Additionally, I don't believe Shox Dr is right about having to apply pressure. That saw is basically the same format as mine and that can be left to descend under its own steam. Mine has a hydraulic damper to control descent rate, the powercut 135 appears to have an adjustable spring tension to do the same.

Fair play, let me re-phrase then. There is a common Chinese design, that is typically available as the 6x4 format saw. Once you've seen one it becomes easy to spot the other clones. Mine is a Sealey SM5, the Clarke equivalent I think is the same, as is the Axminster. Harbor Freight in the US also do a version.
There is a Yahoo group under the title 6x4 band saw ( or similar, haven't looked in ages) that gives tips and mods.

Fran - yup, I know and agree. I was talking to the O.P who seems to have pretty much only found that kind of saw - just saying there are lots of options out there, not just the various brands of that model.
Shox - yeah, that's the pic I found too. My saw has a handle like that, complete with a power button 'trigger' too, plus the return spring. I don't think either of those mean it won't self-lower. I could be wrong, but mine does and I can't see any reason from the pic why that one wouldn't.

I've just cut through a piece of 1 /18 x 8 plate steel with mine. I had to add a few "weights" as it started the cut at about 70* so had little pressure on the blade came back a hour later and it was done so, 45mins to 1hr took about an hour faced all four sides square in the mill needing no more than 20thou to square it up

God - I bet the swarf looked like grinding dust! No good for the blade either - not cutting fast enough, its like spinning a drill bit in a hole instead of cutting a nice helical string of swarf out. At least a bandsaw blade has time to cool down while it rotates though.
I think its a real challenge to find a decent quality bandsaw for sensible money - possibly the weakest area of the lower-end (into 4 figures) metalworking tool market, I think.

Many thanks for all your replies. I am glad to know that someone on here has a Powercut, its more expensive than the normal 6x4, but I am finding it hard get a secondhand one. The Powercut is in Ireland and they will deliver for that price. I also like the bigger cut. Thanks again for your advice. regards. Malcolm.

I have the Clarke version of the 4x6 bandsaw.
Mine took a little tweaking out of the box the same as most others, but now cuts very accurately.
It munched through a piece of 20mmx100mm stock without a problem yesterday, and has also cut it's fair share of schedule 10 304ss weld els, all on the original blade.
I'd say they are hard to beat in that price range.

TD4, just to clarify, if you mean me, then I don't have a powercut, I have a much more expensive saw (10x ish), I was just talking about some of the features of that one - not from direct experience of that brand.
I don't think you'd find much more for your money though.

The blade was is still good to go, all be it now abit slower.And you're right about a hole inthe market, a bit like milling machines I guess

Hi Astro_Al. Yes I did think you had one and that gave me confidence to buy as its over 100 more than the Clarke. On the other hand no one was negative. I still would prefer a second hand saw, but they are so hard to find. regards Malcolm.
