Where did anyone claim anything about a £15K car? trying to put words into my mouth? sorry you've failed.
As for being confused, how about trying to understand a post instead ot continually trying to turn it into an argument by consistently trying to manipulate the context, you may actually learn something.

Really I'm just trying to understand what was meant by "these are the only ones to have mastered it" - my point was they are the only ones to have mastered it because they have the high margin luxury cars that lend themselves to high tech (read expensive) manufacturing processes. It's nothing to do with "mastering" anything - the technology has been around for years.

i have a big distrust of aluminium parts in suspension and chassis of cars, mainly because the lower tie rods on a pals a4 collapsed when going down a kerb and the wheel disapeared into the arch.
i dread to think what would have happened if it had collapsed at high speed
the alloy part of the ball joint disintegrated on an 04 plate car
at least with steel parts you have a good chance of knowing when its on its last legs because signs of rust will be present or the joint will bend/have play in it (which should be picked up on MOT) rather than just let go which cast alloy has a tendancy to do when it gets old and brittle/corroded (granted this will problaby only happen on 10 plus year old cars).

I will be the first to put my hand up and admit I don't know a whole lot about the design and manufacture of cars so it will be good to see how techniques used widely outside the car industry are being used.

We're just waiting for some unobtanium arc rods to be delivered (you know, the special ones that can weld carbon fibre) in a non descript coal fueled transit van. Once the lads have burnt several tons of the rods hopefully the lesson will begin. In the mean time I suggest you start reading the class notes as there will be no pictures. If your very lucky you may get a you tube video, but that will be debateable

more times than not, production welding is horrific looking, but as much as i hate it like everyone else, how many times has this actually failed? very very rarely id say. it may not be asthetic, but it probably does the job.
its funny though the way every manufacturer claims to have 'the best welders in the world'
i was at a training course few years ago for the AMG GTS, and they had a chassis on display. he also claimed in his speel to have the best welders in the world. he didnt know where to look when i started pointing out the inconsistency, blobs, undercut, and soot/contamination all over the substructure
