Hoping for some opinion on shed electrics

Crikey, just checked how much it costs to run . £19.50 a week.....Gulp! So although fine to keep it bearable while working out there, keeping it above 5 degrees all winter would mean i would need a part time job to fund it.

theres no such thing a a free lunch. no matter how u apply a 3kw load oil or convection ect u can only get out what u put in even though all the bullshitters selling new technology tell u diffent

Ive decided to use the 3kw one purely for while i am working in there and going to add this to tick over to keep over 5 degrees

Have a look at infra red heating, it might suit your needs better.

Depends where you are in the UK and how cold a winter it is. Our 10ft x 8ft greenhouse is kept above 5 deg.C by a 3KW heater in a seperate thermostat, it also has a propane heater for the really cold spells, this last winter I used one 19kg propane during the cold two weeks and almost no electric during the rest of the winter. Your insulated shed though bigger will take a lot less heating.

But looking at a fan heater they tend to overrun and heat the room higher than what is set on the stat before it turns them off. Now say that room is of a higher temperature with regards to thermal physics you would expect the heat transfer curve to be steeper with regard to heat loss/time as the two bodies are further away from the equilibrium point. Being that the oil heater you would expect to turn off without overrunning the stat so much the equilibrium point would be closer.

But saying all that and taking stat overrun out the equation yeah 3kw is 3kw

but in a shed / workshop some kind of room stat and relay to handle the current would do as there will be less humidity and you will not be watering plant in there.

Trying to keep a shed or workshop warm and dry all the time is costly, it doesn't really matter what the energy source is unless its something dodgy like waste oil or europallets.

If you are trying to stop tools and materials deteriorating a dehumidifier is a good approach.

Warm yourself up by wearing appropriate clothing, work hard (use a hand saw and file) eat properly and when its still cold heat your body not the structure of the building. As I said above.. use an infra red heater.

I used a infra red panel last year, a camping type one but after i was in there for a few hours everything was covered in condensation. If it was the infra red or me breathing i dont know.
I fitted the 3 kw heater tonight, i get a little blink on the roof lights when i turn it on Hope thats normal lol. Now to find the frost protection 500w heater just to take the edge off the winter chill on the frost setting when its not in use.

Wifes not chuffed that im extending the tinkering season. Shame eh!

hope you dont mind me pulling this back up again

with more tools and more so being electrical im considering / wanting to upgrade the electrics

tools in use at moment 13 amp welder, grinder and lights possible lathe in the near future

2 items being used at same time would be lights, 13amp welder or lathe and lights

in future im considering a better welder on a 16 amp system

also wanting now a plasma cutter and also an air compressor 2.2kw to go onto the system however one might be on when the other switches on to refill again

ive looked at the cable calculator

this is whats running now

not so sure on calculations for what im needing to run the run i have is 25 metres to the shed and another 10 meters just to get to consumer box however a junction fuse box could be used between the 10 meters and 25 meters wires

it was one 4ft strip light and a security light now upgrading to 3 lights tops all low energy systems

2 strip units the other is a light over the lathe and other welding bench im thinking of transformer based spot lights
