Just been given a non working em650 honda genny. (650VA)

It was ex railway and was sitting around for a while and then in my mates garage. so a few years.

It wasn't starting. Thought the petrol was probably stale and got some more. funny thing was that the old petrol was a bit pinkish.

replaced the petrol and still nothing.

blew out the fuel feed line and then petrol was just ******* out when the genny was turned on.

Stripped the carb and found that both the feed and primary jets were blocked together with gunge in the float bowl.

Looks like some eejit had put 2 stroke oil in the petrol.
This explains the pink tinge to the fuel and the gunge in the carb.
cleaned out the two jets and it started 1st time.

RESULT!!!

petrol always goes like that when left in the carb it also smells like paint brushes youve left in turps for ages

the petrol in the tank was pink and the carb full of gunge.
smelt like petrol though

I rebuilt some carbs from a bike that had stood for 4 years and the float chambers were green and as above they smelt like old gloss paint. Jets also had something like calcium blocking them and took a lot of cleaning out. Apparently unleaded is worse for this than old leaded fuel. The two stroke oil I use turns fuel green, pink sounds more like paraffin waxing up

the pinkish tint could have been something like redex petrol treatment

I work offshore in production. the byproduct of natural gas production is known as Condensate, this is used for among other things paint products...... Sounds like the petrol changes properties when left too long. After all petrol is distillated oil which is all part of the same family

As said petrol [particularly unleaded it seems] will emulsify if left too long.

Great engines Honda makes, aren't they!!

to be honest you are all underestimating the level of idiocy on the railway, we have guys i wouldn't trust with an electric toothbrush !

As most of our petrol equipment is 2 stroke i would assume someone has just filled the tank with pre mixed fuel without checking
