Honda EM2200 GENERATOR voltage

I'm hoping one of our electrically gifted members can help me out. I have had a honda EM2200 genny(2200wmax load) for quite a long time used for running grinders,drills etc when away from mains power. It still works fine(starts first pull every time) but I have noticed the built in voltmeter is reading a little lower than 230v. I'v tried google and can't find any info' regarding voltage adjustment, recently fitted new brushes to the slip rings and these are bedded in nicely, but is there any way I can adjust anything to bring the voltage back up to where it always used to be.

Hello Ian,
Have not checked it with a meter , but gauge shows about 8-10 volt drop, this generator is meant to produce "clean" electricity proclaimed by Honda to be more stable voltage and spike wise than mains power, I have not tried more revs, but I imagined it would not be quite as simple as turning the wick up.

to adjust this properly you will need a meter capable of reading the output frequency if its a 2 pole alternator it should run at 3000 rpm so you would connect your meter to the output and adjust the throttle so that the frequency is at 50Hz the frequency is more important then the voltage and things are generally more voltage tolerant then frequency.

The voltage should be a bit high with no load, were you measuring it loaded or unloaded ?
The generator is direct coupled to the engine, if you have a good tachometer, you could use the Tach. on the motor end.

if the govenor is working correctly the voltage should stay the same load or no load

^^ correct, thats the job of the AVR. With no load it should produce a slightly higher frequency. This is so the frequency is right when the alt. is under load. One or 2 Hz up or down won't make a great deal of difference to most things but could affect some electronics.
The frequency on my ship goes up and down like a yo-yo and my laptop etc is fine......

My generator runs slightly higher frequency and voltage , when unloaded.
About 10% higher voltage and 4% higher frequency, between no load and full load.

does your genny have an avr ?

It's a multi fuel with automatic start and stop,custom built for a hospital or military.
I have never even been able to determine the manufacturer, it seem to regulate well though.
What are the percentages on voltage and frequency for the Honda ?

so its a decent size then is it petrol and gas ? doubt it will have an avr just a nice big altenator no gadgets
i have 2 diesels neither have avr do have a petrol honda but never checked voltage / frequency

Its meant to run on propane, butane, natural gas or gasoline.
Has a chart inside the door for settings for pure liquefied gasses or blends.

Thanks for the replies chaps,
What sort of meter would I need to measure the frequency? Would it be OK if I connected my angle grinder 900w and then adjusted the revs to 230v on the meter? If I put my meter into the 230v outlet with no load will it read the true produced voltage.

Just a bit of feedback chaps, I did adjust the gov- speed a little and lo-and behold the voltage did climb to the 230v mark,never dreamt it would be so simple, anyway job done, thanks for the help.
