Honda Civic Welding, advice please?

A member of the family has a 'S' reg Honda Civic, the bonnett slam panel has become loose at one end (spot welds have broken) seems in the past the car has been in a shunt.......and the mot is due.....

I can I use a standard mig welder or does it need to be mig/brazed???


Can anyone advise me, please.

get a couple of pics up. you could probably drill a few holes in it and puddle weld them.

I dont understand the question really but as said here drill some holes in the top panel and puddle it. Not structural there.

It will not be any special steel if that is what you are worried about, Boron steel is only used in modern cars, not old Japanese clunkers Just use ordinary mig as above, fine for the job.

Thanks Ped, I haven't stitched old cars back together for years, having read here about Boron Steels and Mig/Brazing wasn't sure when the manufacturers started using it................all old cars were modern one day........

Hi all,

I've been wondering about boron steel as well - people always say 'newer/modern cars' but, as zzr1200 said, all cars were modern once. Is there an easy way to tell if something is boron steel, or a rule of thumb along the lines of 'anything made after [insert year] contains boron steel'?

I doubt it's that simple as (like with airbags, folding hardtops etc) technology filters down from top of the range cars etc. Obviously things/alloys get trick(i)er with time but i know mercedes were using HSLA steels for key areas back with the W124 series if not earlier, but AFAIK the uhss steels have only been appearing over the last 10 years- Porsche started using boron steels (bottom of page) around 2002, Volvo 1999. Not like they're making the whole car out of the stuff though
