Buy the saw restore it and use it SAFELY....

I own 4 chainsaws a Husky 42, a Husky 372XP, an Echo 900EVL and a Husky 338XP top handle chainsaw.

Now in most other parts of the world a top handle saw would be mainly used in one hand, but due to our wonderful H&S advice/regs it is apparently now to be used as a 2 handed saw, might as well not bother owning one.

A typical case of the H&S person behind the office desk not understanding how/why a tool is designed to be used...

Now before everybody starts pulling my reply apart, how many of us have and use machinery that wouldn't meet today's strict H&S standards, I certainly do in my home workshop, I can't afford all the latest kit.

Not only can I not afford all the latest kit, a lot of the time I don't want it, I prefer the old kit.

Most of the machinery I own doesn't meet modern H&S standards, it's old kit that was built upto a standard and will probably out live me unlike a lot of modern stuff that seems to built down to a price and lasts just long enough for the warranty to run out.

This is true, but most of the H&S boys probably wouldn't know how to use a chainsaw in practice, they may know the theory on paper.

Agree that's why I believe that H&S was relavaint to working practices about 20 years ago, today it seems just a legalized way of passing the buck along to the next person, in most cases.

Cut out the middle man, use the chain saw engine to build a kart.









(That was my only experiance of chain saws, building karts at school in the early 1980's)

My first engine rebuild was a Suffolk Colt with my dad. I pulled a Suffolk engine out of the scrap bin the other day - I have no real use for it but nostalgia.
An old mower is a nice little project, a bit safer for your boy & when it's done you can get him to demonstrate it once a week round the garden

I had chat with my Mini Me, she thinks, if it was "do-able" with out spending a small fortune on it and it does not cost an arm and a leg she would be interested in it.

We have done small engines from the age she was small.

That's her on her first small engine, Suffolk Punch Engine. I did the " daddy" bits.

She was even welding before she was 10, still does it.

I have no issue with her doing the work, but under supervision.
But are parts available.

Please convey this to my employers, who revel in supplying us bilge dwellers with lovely white flame retardant overalls. They rapidly become polkadot overalls, followed by becoming after washing a few times mottled grey with splotches overalls.

Not as bad ass the day we came home, had to strip of, wash down outside.
Then use a magnet to clean the bath from the metal dust.

Or the day Mrs TYA and saw coloured smoke rings above our hose.

Final UpDate.
The auction happened today, the chain saw was an early item.
Described as Non working and non compliant to current H&S regulations.
Reserve/ starting price was £20.

I had a poke and play.
This is what I noticed.
Bar Bent.
No pull cord.
No plug.
It looked ropey.

Final price.
£75.

A fool and their money.
I was willing to go up to £30. But 2 bidders in the room soon took it up.

I am sure a project will rrive soon.

I wouldn't of paid £75 for it either. None of the problems you found are major all very easily put right. I wonder if the plug and starter rope were taken off as it didn't meet current H&S regulations.

i sold a sthil strimmer it runs but would cough and search now and again so listed as so and prob could do with a proper service

it sold for £100 and the bloke did actualy come round and picked it up 2nd hand working fine was only £20 quid more then he paid

I asked when I settled up. It arrived in that state, from a house clearance. They will remove anything, clean or survey. It is all sold as seen.
A word with one of the staff and the feed back was it was "Grand dads tool, but we don't know what it is"
But is was a ropey old thing, scrap or as an ornament yes.
Spending money, no chance.

I bought a brand new telescopic sight for £180, changed it a few years later. Put it on eBay, starting bid was £80, sold for £245.
