My ex made ancient orange wine that was very popular, also very potent.

Not sure about ancient orange wine, but i used to make this ancient orange mead recipie using honey when I was big into homebrewing.
The recipie works a treat and tastes lovely, although its better if left to mature.

My Dad made wine from all sorts. Blackberry was good & Sloe wine also. Rosehip wine was good. He made some rice wine that came out very powerful & aged two years was superb. My wife & i never really got into wine making, we did once make a batch of ginger wine which we decanted into champagne bottles. It got explosive & two bottles went off one night with a terrible bang & mess, It was nice though!
Today i stick with beer, The Muntons woodland citra keg has been breached & very nice it is too!

You need to keep your feet firmly planted on the ground w.r.t. home wine & beer making , if you're not careful as its a quick route to broken marriages and type two diabetes .

I rarely ever got a decent self picked black berry wine , most developed a musty smell when fermenting and had an off taste after bottling . Black berry is renowned for wild yeast & insect borne problems . So I used four large jars of home made black berry jam , safe in the knowledge that all the goodness was held in he sugar and all the wild yeasts & any bug stuff had been killed due to the 300 o F jam making heat .

Very true, I brew beer about three times a year & a 40 pint keg will last me a couple of months.
A friend brews one keg a week & drinks it too. He doesnt do too bad on it, wiry guy late 70's & fit who never puts weight on! In his prime it was more.
I couldnt do it.

The cork came out clean!

Amazingly it's drinkable, quite complex, fruity with sherry notes. Very warming too.
