I'm looking for suggestions for a home workshop. I'm lucky to live on a small holding with very understanding neighbors (a firewood and fencing place next door). My tools live in an old, small ex-chicken shed. I have to drag them out into the yard to use them. I do have an 8'x10' used shipping container that provides a bit of cover, but it's my home gym and there isn't much room to work in it (packed with weights etc). I'm considering buying another container of the same size to turn into a workshop. They're not too expensive used: £400 to buy and another £200 to have it delivered and craned in. Any other suggestions?

Never been a fan of metal containers personally. Condensation producing moisture traps, they are. If you can, though it would likely be more expensive, I'd try and plump for something of wooden construction, suitably coated, every time.

Seems a lot of money for what will be a small workshop, think I would be investing in some blocks and start building, if you can find some reclaimed roofing sheets, upvc door and window from classifieds or even freecycle then your £600 will go a long way.

I got a 16x8 Tongue and Groove shed without a floor as I had put down a concrete base for £600, it then cost me another £200 to panel and insulate it, warm as toast after a couple of mins with the heater on

Yes, condensation is a problem in my home gym.
I had priced building with new timber and it did work out more expensive.
Freecycle is new to me. I'll look into it.

Concrete panel garages can usually be got free (for collection).
Three trips in a transit van - one day's hire @£60 + a day's labour (nother £60?) - I shifted mine on my own.

New roof beams from 13ft scaffolding boards if neccessary - pay about 50p-75p/ft
Second hand steel profile roof sheets if neccessary

Dig a 12-18" wide trench, about a foot deep, where the walls will go.
Fill with crush+run, brick rubble, road planings etc (about 10-15 quid a tonne, collected) then WELL RAMMED (a whacker plate costs about 30 quid a day to hire)

total cost should come to 300-600 quid total - depends how far you have to travel to collect, and if you need a new roof.


A 20ft container would only cost you about +£200 and I've never heard anyone say "my shed's too big"

Have a look on Google for sheds/workshops made from pallets,your be surprised what others have managed to do with them and they're free.
Also have a chat with your friendly neighbors,there's your posts and cladding sorted for a start
