Hi, I found this link through another forum and thought it might be of interest. I know it's from a woodwork site but I think it could have wider uses, There is more info in the comments below.

Could I really be bothered with all that messing about for the sake of a mallet, nah...would spend a fiver first on the bay of evil.

At the same time though, the melting and possible moulding of the material is interesting

hmm, but could you be bothered making similar simple shapes ? probably not, you would be ebay again

So he made a basic compression mould. I don't think it's great the process he is using, too much risk of fractures through the layers as it's not really properly melted together. Waste of time and effort in my view when you can buy a decent nylon mallet for relative pennies compared to the hours wasted on that.

Probably spend a fiver on electric between the blender and the cooker, but agreed interesting and probably more use for making something not so easily obtainable.

Hi, that's what caught my interest, the cheapness, readily available and ease of working the raw material. There are other possible uses of it, I can't think of anything right now, but I will know it when I see it

Nothing wrong with making your own tools if you cant buy them easy or economically, after that its just "because I can" or "because I have nothing better to do" fair enough in all three cases.

When I was a kid I needed a mallet for a wood chisel inherited from my Uncle. I made one using a section of an ash branch from the stick house and a piece of aluminium tubing from an old tv aerial. 30+ years later the ash branch has seasoned well and is rock hard but it still gets used for giving things a light tap.

its not allways down to just buying things that are cheap enough. its the satisfaction of making it yourself . i can spend 2 days making something that i could buy for a hundred quid and i could just go out to work and make 250 quid in the day . wheres the fun in that . no point in having a workshop if u aint gonna make anything
