Why celotex and ply line?
Just build a proper cavity walled structure with DPC and cavity wall insulation. It will more likely be cheaper and it will be a stronger building.

Or better dump fillingbthe cavity because its not a great idea and clad the outer with the celutex, mesh and k render in pannels

nobody's mentioned floor/foundation, but if you are pouring a new base, set a couple (at least) of 4" steel beams of some type (RSJ, channel or even angle) in the concrete - then if you need a "come along" or to tack something huge up, you can weld directly to it.

Have you seen concreate explode when heated ? I should be more than cautious personally

Well while we are at faffing doing the house up, windows next month happy days. Andnew drive asap i want to start to design the detached garage i want to build, it will be a DIY job and outside dimensions of 27` x 17`. Lets say i have planning permission to get that otu th way. We got it for a large cony and that is going to be replaced with this.

It will built from breeze block, the block size ? but for the front that will be matching brick with the house. A single 10` wide door. It will be lined with 100mm Celotex and ply lined with 6mm ply.

Now what i need to work on is the gantry i want to build into it. this is a rough, very rough sketch to what i think will work but not sure how to build the gantry into the build.

Yellow beam being the main runner.And obviously more trusses. Also pillars along the side. I want these trusses so i get more head room as this will be built to the 2.5m eaves and 4m overall height for ease of the PP. I say ease as it will be built towards a highway to the right of it. House is to the left divided by a 3.5` alley way which goes all around it. If th eaves are ok it will in my reckoning give a 10` height by 10 ` width. entrance

So do you think the trusses will be ok and how to build in the gantry.

If this is to complex to discuss this is there a good online programme to work with fro a DIY`er ?

If its not the conservatory you could encouter isdues with the projection towards the roadway. Dont know the ins and outs but highways will get a say under thesecc
these conditions and they are far more sympathetic to glass than block walls..

Just saying get it passed before you spend on the work itself under given circumstances

This was the sort of thing I was thinking:

I was going to have the long beams on top of the wall so the shorter moving beam would be, err, shorter.

I appreciate the dollies are not fully sketched out (and it might twist) but it's just a sketch. Also it's not really the right way up but I am a bodger and it would work for me. Planning Enforcement made me lower the roof so it was a no go. I might try and be cheeky, raise the roof (!) and stick one in there before I become too decrepit to lift anything.

Good setup, this is what I've planned for my garage, only the parallel rsj's would be supported on several block wall abutments as shown in the middle of your diagram rather than on top of the walls. This gantry design allows for total floorspace access and moving machinery around and heavy items like chucks onto a lathe, vices on a mill, or benches along the walls etc..

fairy snuff - it's up to you.

but I've had one, and used one, for years - never had an issue. we're only talking quick tacks, not laying down 10 meter long beads @400a

Back on this as i may well put the pad inplace first before doing the drive yet.

I just read this on building regs ( Either way timber or block it will have a matching house brick front and side arch access gate, tempted to go timber garage )

Reading this if i was to build it to 30sqm and 4m from the boundary from block it will not need building regs. Now if i was at a later date ( few months ) extend the back to just over 1m of the boundary then it will still not need building regs ? this will get the 40sqm i want with no building regs needed..

The Building Regulations will probably apply if you intend to carry out any of the following work:

• erect a new building or extend an existing building (unless the building or extension is exempt from control under the regulations);
• make structural alterations to an existing building (including underpinning);
• change the use of an existing building (in certain cases);
• provide, extend or alter drainage facilities;
• install a heat producing appliance (gas appliances installed by persons approved under the Gas Safety Regulations are usually exempt from this requirement);
• install cavity wall insulation;
• install an unvented hot water storage system;
• domestic electrical installations.

Exempt building work - detached buildings
A detached single storey building, having a floor area which does not exceed 30 square metres, which contains no sleeping accommodation and is a building:

• no point of which is less than 1 metre from the boundary of its curtilage; or
• which is constructed substantially of non-combustible material.

A detached building having a floor area which does not exceed 15 square metres, which contains no sleeping accommodation

I noticed i missed this section on extensions if that matters as highlighted above an exempt building reg building does not need building regs to extend it.

Exempt building work - extensions
The extension of a building by the addition at ground floor level of:

• a conservatory, porch covered yard or covered way; or
• a carport open on at least two sides;

where the floor area of that extension does not exceed 30 square metres, provided that in the case of a conservatory or porch which is wholly or partly glazed, the glazing satisfies the requirements of Part K Section 5: Protection against impact with glazing, it remains able to be separated from the original building e.g. by a door and has a separate temperature and on/off controls on any fixed heating.
