hole size to metal edge ratio

can some point me in the right direction of how you work out what the hole size can be in relation to the edge of the metal and the size hole in relation to the material width

I was once told by a structural engineer that holes should be no closer than 1.5x the diameter away from the edge whenever possible. He said thats a rough rule of thumb.

Depends on the metal you are using .

There used to be tinsmiths rule on it and also aircraft /airframe fitters charts for it .. I'd play Google or ask someone like Debbs she seems to have been involved in things aircraft.

On a hunch I googled " sheet metal worker hand book" and found
"thesheetmetalshop.com" , they have numerous sections and seem on par with this site.

Any structural steelwork I've drawn has been based on 1.5 dia.

Yeah, 1.5 x diameter of the hole away from the edge. Only a guideline though.

Depending on how detailed you want it you could calculate the tear out of the hole if you know the forces that will be applied thourght the fixing.

However as a good rule of thumb i agree with the rest of the posts 1.5x diameter of the hole

At least thats what i stick to when designing any sheet metal components

the reason i asked is ive seen a modified brake caliper bracket for a scooter and there is only 3mm either side of the M8 fixing and that isnt including allowing for the thread depth either side, i asked the seller if it was safe and he said yes plus he,s made the bracket from stainless steel as well with some fancy design inside with very sharp edges plus he couldnt tell me the spec or grade of metal used ....im gonna steer well clear as it just looks like it will fold up

Have you got a link or pictures please, i'm gonna be knocking up an adaptor bracket for a set of scooter forks in the near future and i'd like to see what to avoid...
