Historic MOT

Not particularly bothered as my MG was registered August 78 so is just a bit too young for exemption. It will be exempt this time next year, but for the life of me I cant find out why vehicles 1960-77 are not exempt when 77-78 are. Am I missing something here?

The New MOT rules come in later this month 20th May. Among the changes are Cars, vans, motorcycles and other light passenger vehicles won’t need to have an MOT if they’re over 40 years old and have not been substantially changed in the previous 30 years. This is based on the manufactiring data and not the registration date. currently its vehicles manufactured before 1960 are exempt.

1 January 1978 onwards
You must get an MOT and pay vehicle tax.

If you don’t know when your vehicle was built, but it was first registered between 1 and 7 January 1978, you don’t have to pay vehicle tax.

1 January 1960 to 31 December 1977
You must get an MOT, but don’t have to pay vehicle tax.

Before 1 January 1960
You don’t have to get an MOT or pay vehicle tax.

... I cant find out why vehicles 1960-77 are not exempt when 77-78 are. Am I missing something here?

A small point but other bits of the .GOV disagree, saying it's the date of registration

"When the rules change on 20 May 2018, vehicles won’t need an MOT from the 40th anniversary of when they were registered. You can check the date the vehicle was registered online."

You suggest I'm getting confused between current rules and those post may 20 then?

I'm sure i read somewhere its the date of manufacture. I'ts usually only a few monthas difference, but could mean an extra Years MOT. Its probably easier to check the registration date than the manf. date.

It is written as date of manufacture. Seems the onus is on the owner to poverty date of manufacture. (Classic car register). If not available it's sourced from log book
