I need to paint a mild steel exhaust system that has lost it's aluminised coating. does anyone know of a paint/coating that will do the job (successfully)?
I've used Sperex VHT and various others in the past, but t.b.h, unless you have an oven big enough to bake them on, they just turn grey and don't seem to last long. They won't cure enough by engine heat alone.
But I've had some great results with Barbeque paint, believe it or not. Look out for Plastikote BBQ project paint. The 2-stroke crowd swear by it.

I use heatshield paint, think it is made by Hammerite. Says on the tin safe up to 700 deg C. Comes in spray cans.
I normally use the black for closure plates for wood burners, but have used the silver one as well.
Used BBQ paint but didn't hold up too well on headers. Likewise with some stove paint. Surprisingly some satin black stuff from Halfords of all places has lasted perfectly on my bike. Ridden all winter, not washed in 8 months and it's all good. Came in a brushing tin but I thinned & sprayed it.
I use Hycote VHT on the odd mild steel exhaust i make, it lasts pretty well if you media blast first and phophate coat before paint and then warm up slowly.
You can still get them ally sprayed as well.
These have been done a while now and still look quite good. Its impossible to keep the primaries from going grey due to the heat but the rest stays up good.
Just remembered - POR20 is good. Used it on headers before. Thinned it for spraying, can be brushed. It lasted fine, used it on a V8 and a bike. Not completely weatherproof, on the car had to touch up tiny rust spots once a year but oddly the bike was fine despite being right in the weather/puddle zone (flat four). Frosts have it.
Have them ali sprayed.
I used to have all my headers sprayed. I never saw a set more than a few years old[they still looked new] so have no real idea of how long they lasted. But I had the exhaust system on my GSX sprayed, the ceramic coated systems rust away after a year, or less, of all weather use, the system was still good after 10 years when I flogged the bike. This is about 7 years of all weather use, everyday 60-80 miles and left out 24hrs a day.
