We had a visit from our Tec centre structures Guru yesterday, and he mentioned a new process they have been working on (new to them, not sure about the rest of industry). Basically, it's a laser mig method, that has a combined head and puts down a laser weld followed by a conventional mig weld over the top. The advantage is you can weld upto about 14mm plate, full penertation, with no joint prep and minimal joint, at very high speeds. Anybody heard of anything like this before?

Its called "Laser Hybrid".........Fronius have a version but the TWI also developed a version.

It works very very well, as you said very high welding speeds compared to mig and much better gap tolerance than conventional laser welding.........only downside, its extreamly expensive.......basic Yag laser costs over £250,000.....then you have to add the welding/control systems.
