I hear everything you have said and i agreeSorry roofmam but that is really bad advice and specifically how not to start a saw. Sometimes the pull cord snatches back therefore your motion sends the saw bar round hitting your leg quite hard in the best case scenario. Worst case is the saw has started before the pull cord snatches, and if the chain break isn't on sends a spinning chain round into your leg. I know plenty of people who have done the former and got large bruises, fortunately I don't know anyone that has had it start before the snatch.
Chainsaws should be started either with the rear handle between your legs and front handle held with left hand, or right heel on the rear knuckle guard and left hand on front handle with left knee on floor.
Even 90cc saws should be relatively easy to start without hitting the decomp button when started like this.
