Hide Mallet.

I got myself a Hide headed mallet.

Just throwing out to the members, how would you restore the dried out head.
Maybe @mrsbruce can part with wisdom?

rawhide is dried raw hide i'm not sure whether it needs rehydrating

I’ve used up my quota of wisdom for this week.

Although, I had found my little rawhide mallet looking all dried out while living in the conservatory. Took it out to use in my hut, and the air was just ‘moist’ enough to bring it back to life.

Other than that, you’re on your own.

Wouldn't saddle soap help? Or would that make it too soft?

I would imagine so. Any finish might turn it squdgy.

My initial reaction was to try 'neatsfoot oil', which is still available. However although it is recommended for preserving leather, which is a good thing in the case of the mallet. Neatsfoot oil is also used for softening leather as well which may not be so good.

I just use a little Olive oil on anything leather...the mallet just needs a wipe over with a dab on a kitchen paper towel...couple of wipes it'll look like new.....
would only do the stike face once tho.....

....

To add, if you have a rawhide mallet, and the face is goosed, just saw off the damaged bit to give you a new surface.

Having just watched a youtube vid on stuff folk have flung out, I’m sure the concept of a pencil sharpener is beyond some people.

If I sharpen a pencil and the lead falls out 3 times In a row it gets slung. That's the problem with keeping em in your pocket.

Split the wood, that makes good kindling.
The graphite gets crushed and used to dry lubb stuff.

Coloured ones get saved, melted own and used as a cheep wax fill,
