Hi there, i just stumbled across this site and wish known about somthing like this 5 years ago when i started welding up rusty astra's.
I've just got an inverter so im trying my hand at scratch start tig this weekend, should be fun.

Hi Ben, welcome to the forum .
What inverter did you buy? Lots of tig pointers on here, have a good read and prepare yourself .

i got a good deal on a sealy 80amp jobby to go in my van, just got a tig torch today for it cant be any harder than gas welding

If you can gas weld you already have the basic technique so tig ought to be fairly straightforward for you.

that's what i'm hopeing it's been a little while since i used gas though, best to jump in at the deep end and baffle the sump for my car i think (at least it wont be seen).
