hi im new

first things first hi to everyone this is a good forum right on to my question i have been giving a cosmo 150 gas/gasless mig now when i plug it in the power switch lights up and the fan spins and it also feeds the flux at all the speed settings but i cant get no spark from it after reading this forum theres a few post saying about cleaning up the relay points so i had a look and found it had a little black scorch mark on the casing so i cleaned it up and still nothing so what i need to know is is there any other reason it aint working and if so what is it and if i need a new relay or pcb where can i get it and how much the welder is still new looking and the bloke i got it from said it sparked inside and then stoped workin so please can some shine some light on it for me thanks hope to get some replys soon mike

Hey mike, don't you get out of breath?
Sounds like you may have blown a diode. (well, not you, but the lad who gave you the set). Weldequip may well be your man...

If you have a look inside, there should be a plate, or two with a couple of diodes set in. If there is a burnt bit, that's the trouble.

thanks si i do take a breath but i whanted to explain in full detail so someone could see what i was on about any way i just checked it and they are fine the only thing thats got black marks is the relay on the board itself and the contact is black i think i need to change this but i would like a second opinion

If you don't get any good answers by tomorow eve, take a pic if you can and post it in a new thread in the welding machines section. More likely to be read than intros, maybe. If its a relay gone, something else might have caused it. Then again, relays can blow on their own! Very cheap to replace.

ok cheers mate where could you buy the relays from its that its the only thing with black scorch mark on

I think he is refering to your (lack) of correct use of full stops.

I would also double check the earth lead, make sure the cable is not damage etc, as you wont get any arc without proper earthing. Also make sure the metal you want to weld has no paint on it, and if needs be, clean up a patch with a grinder for the earth clamp.
If you have checked this, as said above it will be an electrical problem in the welder. Usually cheap and easy to fix if you locate the problem, but im geussing this is why you were 'given' the welder.

Maplins or any decent electronics shop will do relays, but you will have to identify the relay type/size/contacts/switch mode etc. There arn't too many though. If you can desolder the relay and take it in, they'll match it.

i have checked the earth lead and its still new no breaks or scuffing the welder has only seen a little use till this problem happened he had the welder on a ext lead in the garden so maybe that was the cause

ok cheers ill get it off the board today at some point my girlfreinds dad is a electricion i might just ask him to do it for me. he will know a lot more than me he's also a self employed engineer so he's good with fiddly things
