One for Runnach here:- what would the HF gap be on a Transtig 375?
And no, T, I havn't started getting it going yet, just getting in there while the q's in my mind
I don't have the 375 manual now, that stuff got left when we moved, I'll try to remember to call my plant maint guy, he will no for sure what HF gap setting should be for the boc.

15>20 thou rings a bell? Info should be available on-line? If the contactors are badly pitted, grind them flush using a proper machine tool grinder, not a 4" hand grinder. And nope, gap setting will not be on m/c data plater. I'll give my man a call tomorrow to confirm correct setting.

Simon, made inquiries regarding HF gap for BOC beastie. The guy couldn't give a definitive answer but, I did get a scientific rule of thumb response, which went something like this, in the old days, rule of thumb if no feeler gauge was at hand, a normal fag packet thickness was the norm gap used
personally I would set at 25 thou, no harm can be done if on the tight side.

All the torch etc spares are still available from boc if you can find someone helpful enough...
Do you want me to measure the gap on mine? its a running unit currently...
If anyone has any documentation for these, id be interested in it too...

25 thou sounds like a lot. The Miller/Airco's want 0.008-0.010. That is what a thick paper packet thickness would be.
Too large a gap is hard on the capacitors. My oil-filled caps had boiled over due to previous user not setting the gap (get bigger over time.) Mine was 0.020 when i got it

Cheers for the pic Mr F, sweated buckets at the hands of the transtig, beast of a machine, go's to show how technology has moved forward from the old still going strong BOC machines to invertor machines offering same capacity output with a handle for carrying!
Shenion, I recall the settings you state but relating to old Lincoln sets I used to use. I do not doubt similar for transtig, good points made, need to investigate further.

Shen, your gap looks like a promiscuous one - gets a ride on all the data sheets, so that may well be a starting point. I've read two thicknesses of standard paper were a good rule of thumb. As you say, too much gap stresses the capacitors. Have read that elsewhere too. I downloaded the murex transtig manual. Different set, but the same general rules are there and seem to apply to all.
