hello all

just found your forums (well a couple of hours of reading ago!)and really enjoyed reading through the problems and all the excellent advice given

i started welding with one of those rawlplug battery welders (anyone else remember them?), you could link up to three car batteries together with jump leads and they could really do the job on upto 1/4" plate- no more though
i used it to weld suspension tops on a hillman avenger, bits of plate onto my old mk 1 escort, i even made a set of axle stands with it, it's now languishing somewhere in the darkest recesses of my garage

i have a cebora 100a pocket mig (unfortunately no cooling fan) but it resets quick-ish when i blow the compressor in through the vents, it's about 18years old and cost me £125 bought through my company (got it cheap cos our place spends thousands with 'em)

oh, i'd better shut up now before i bore everyone to sleep
ps, i have a dreaded sip 130t dp unit with the obligatory wire transport probs:full and a cemont tig inverter but set up as a stick welder- seriously smooth is that little beggar

Welcome Johnny You've probably come across several posts on here describing how to improve the wire feed on sips and who to PM for any bits you need. Hillman Avenger eh? My first car was a metallic dark brown one, a 1200L, paid £20 for it, kept it for 18 months and sold it for £85, 325% profit can't be bad eh? Once had the clutch cable rip through the bulkhead, common problem iirc, pulled over, yanked the cable back through and clamped a set of mole grips on it just to get me home. Sold it with them still on there

the avenger was my bro in laws, it was a shed he ended up putting an engine in (cos it was clapped out too!) and forgot to put the mounting bolts in
he also did an oil change and forgot to replace the sump plug-you guessed it, a gallon of valvoline ran all the way down our street

I loved that car! Maybe cos it was my first one, we used to go everywhere in it. The driver's door lock didn't work so I had to climb in the passenger side all the time. My brother had one too, he had a 2 door 1300, nicer than mine but a bugger to start in the mornings. Hi Johnny,

Sheffield again, and yes I had one of those Rawlplug welders myself! I also had a Hillman Avenger as a company car.

I had one of these once too and gave it away to a farmer friend who has now moved away, I remember it being a bit akward but liked it as it was a gadget, anyway have just bought an old hillman Hunter and was wondering if you wanted to sell it for a reasonable price, if not please forgive this question, its just that you dont see them hardly at all, many thanks Steve.
