Hey.. I'm here because I own a T4

Every time I've owned an old vehicle I've wished I knew how to weld.
Last year I ended up spending £900 on welding on my 92 VW T4
This year it looks like it could do with a bit of bodywork so I think it's time I learnt.

This forum has already given me loads of info on equipment over the past week lurking so figured I really should join properly.

Welcome to the forum, i too have a 2001 t4 2.5 tdi and so far doesnt require any welding however i noticed slight bubbling round the windscreen and could do with a respray as it has a few dents...I would get a decent welder from Cebora, Parweld,Lincoln, etc...machine mart does sell a few decent models but for a few quid more you can get better motor drive and a far better euro torch. even looking at 2nd hand models is not bad as opposed to buying new, you will get most your money back if you find a good welder ! Budget for decent PPE, a gas bottle and regulator + loads of consumables, hence why buying used package usually is better value for money ! Look in the classifieds too, bargains to be found there too from time to time !

Essential skill and kit to have with a T4 I got my T4 real cheap because the guy that owned had took it to the garage to have the welding done for an mot and and was told it was not economical to do, good for me though, a couple weeks of late nights its a great van now. I am in the process turning it into something I can chill in in the summer wood works another thing though.

I owned one of the early T4, engine up front camper vans for over 10 years, it were no spring chicken when I got it.

It never let me down, done many European holidays etc, I remember replacing the cam belt etc but apart from the usual, nothing seem to wear out, no shocks, ball joints or such like.

I'd like to see it now, maybe the bodywork on that needs attention now...

I took mine to a local garage to get my windscreen looked at and they told me to get rid of it and they wouldn't touch it lol.
Thankfully I found a t4 and vintage vw specialist not too far away (near Scarborough) who was used to this sort of stuff and now it's solid and mechanically sound.
So just needs prettying up a bit now really.

Best start saving the cornflakes boxes there great for making templates saves on metal

I own a 96 Transporter with the 5 cylinder 2.5 tdi motor...can out run a lot of newer vans when its empty. needs a bit of new metal on the step..door rubbers trap water

Welcome. So far I’ve had a 96 2.4D and still have a 02 2.5tdi ex aa. Also have a 09 t5. Have been lucky with them all that very little welding has been needed
