Best approach is to find some scrap metal about the same thickness as you plan to weld and then give it a try.

From new welder to a reasonable weld normally takes a couple of afternoons experimenting with MIG.

You can try out your welds by putting your scrap pieces in a vice and bend it this way and that until it breaks. If the break goes through the weld it's a bad weld. If it breaks somewhere else then you are in with a chance.

been practising some more, but a failed mot brought the real thing somewhat forward! not too impressed with the second one, but it was the most difficult to get access too! the plate i put in the day after went much better but i did that one from above, no pics of that one tho no batteries left and it's blathered in wayoyl now!!

Definately your going in the right direction

Good luck with the MOT test...personally I find them worse than going to the dentist I'd be tempted to put some seam sealer on the welds and then cover with protective coating, hammerite or such like? just a suggestion...others may come back with better solutions

seems seeler pushed in with a brush then loads of stone chip.

Then brush some paint on.

Rust convertor (I use Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80), seam sealer, paint then stone chip/underseal.
