I think you're supposed to but I suspect plenty don't.

Older work hover hasn't seen a bag in 6 years. Its 8 or 9 years old now. Newer one is bagged and will stay that way for final clean ups.

We've got a Henry (Well, Numatic) in our flat, someone needs to replace the filter though, I couldn't tell you how bad it smells without making more work for the mods.

Just put it in a washing machine - will smell like new afterwards! Don't tumble dry it though!

A lot of the filtration is done by the bag so yes! They are cheap enough on Ebay. Cloth ones are best but paper bags are better than no bags!

well we all should learn something every day and I just spotted a comment on FB that Henry is a British company and manufacture is solely in the UK.

whether that means making them in China and sticking the eyes on here I don't know but pretty impressed if its correct.

I've always preferred VAX here which is a UK company but a thirty second google suggests far east ownership and therefore probably manufacture.

We've got three now, we are on our second in the house, first one lasted about 15 years before the motor blew, it had a very hard time through loads of building work. I have what I think is a tall version of Charles in the workshop, its a wet and dry one, and a very old 110v Henry that I acquired with a Tom Senior mill as a job lot ages ago. I do have an old dyson, I threw the filter away and use the cyclone bit on the sand blaster.

No bag in mine. Cloth filter under the motor. I use it for all sorts, mostly hoovering up swarf.

I use bags because they provide more filtering and it makes emptying a clean process.

They are made in the UK and on the website their history is quite interesting, they started out making vacuums for cleaning coal/oil/gas fired boilers.

They can still supply parts for every vacuum they have ever made, wouldn't it be great if all companies were like that?

We live in a strange world where we often believe products don't last because manufacturers want you to buy new products yet someone like Numatic makes products that can be abused for decades and they are still massively successfull.

currently got 3 dysons , and accuired 2 henrys over the last 2 weeks , thanks to the forum both are now working ,one has been rehomed to a joiner friend the other i am keeping,neither have bags in them.

just using my hetty cleaner today coupled to the diamond wall and floor chaser and it gave up got it given mind will look to see if its something stupid like the lead as it stopped suddenly with no smell

used to work installing cat 5/6 cabling used henys back then used to use it with no bags but soon learned stick a bag in to change once power lacks a a bag change takes 30 secs with a bag and without a bag spend 5 mins cleaning the filter i put bags in them now

Bagless.
When your sucking up wood shavings concrete screws etc if fills up quick.

Tip it in the skip and bang the filter out.
Have a new henry for good if/when required.

We have a Miele cylinder. Best vac we have ever had; better than our old Dyson upright. If that goes bust though I will look at getting a Henry. Always fancied one and if they are made in the UK that is a huge plus.

We have a Henry & a Charles with the carpet cleaning top + a Bosch industrial s bit like the Henry only taller it is at least 40 years old & noisy but sucks like a champion the other thing is it has a large hose with a standard sized end, so the hose does not get blocked or suffer from @james butler Problem with screws & swarf if Newmatic did this they would be perfect, only down the road from Us as well

Just down the road from me in Chard, I even did a small job for them once in the tiny on-site datacentre. They also promote the apprentice scheme the goverment was pushing a while back...

I've just bought a cheapo cyclone, cost about 12 quid and has around 50mm inlet and outlet. I have some of those plastic food tubs with lids and locking bands, about 35 litres, the plan is to stick the cyclone on top and drive it from the henry, should mean less bag emptying on the big stuff like shavings from the planer thicknesser.

I want a 100mm inlet/outlet cyclone for my big dust extractor but they seem to cost a gold pig.
