On the one I fixed, the thermal trip was clipped to the motor and on blue wires. Not sure if it measures air temp or current. Your one behind the switch would have to be current, or be a suppressor.....
I assumed it was air temp, hence by the airflow of the motor?? It was a glass bulb, with a flat bi-metallic strip and two contacts, 'bout 5/6mm round and 15mm long.

Took the carbon brushes out and initially I thought they looked really short, only about 6mm protruding but then realised that there's plenty of carbon stick left they're just sticking.
Is this common? If they begin sticking should I just replace them?

it could be the dust causing them to stick clean the brush and the carriers and it should be fine as long as the brushes are not too short and at full extension, are the ends pitted ? usually at least one is when they are playing up due to arcing

yes clean them up, they usually have an angled face when new to suit the commutator

Henry has returned to full health. And for those worried about my neighbours tvs, I have replaced the suppressor.
