That sort of thing any use? It's clearly not a hemisphere but can be had reasonably cheaply and I recon would make a decent fire pit with a few mods

This is probably the best bet; test-expired LPG tanks come up on Ebay, just a matter of waiting for one local enough to collect, or finding one in a scrappy where the owner won't try and pull your pants down.

I have a design I'm working on to manufacture as an octagon. This will give me lots of opportunities to make mistakes with design, marking out, cutting, fabrication - the lot. But then to learn from them.

A mix of pentagons and hexagons will work well Gerry. Like a football.

Not a perfect sphere but it would play to the strengths of your process as you can punt out as many identical polygons as you like
