I have taken a young lad under my wing as he has an interest in cars and such. He has no money and is indeed still at college but he has an interest in our lines of work/diy/interests. I have had him doing some welding, grinding and the like and he got well dirty. It did not put him off, and so he passed the first test! I gave him a full set of tools, a 2 ton jack and axle stands and a pair of overalls so that he could have a go at his place if the chance arose. As luck would have it he was gifted a 1999 Corsa Mk 1 (B) that has been badly lowered and needs sorting out. The car would not go into 5th and all his mates told him it needed a gearbox! He had a go at taking it out himself but soon got stuck so he asked me to help. Bless him, he had taken the outer wings off and completely disconnected both front suspensions, anti roll bars, bumper to name a few. Anyway he had a go so I went over and pointed him at the bits he still needed to do to complete the removal. There were still a number of bolts to remove, plugs to disconnect, shafts to pull and linkage to disconnect but we soon had the box out. These cars are apparently notorious for poor selector linkage and the model B does not seem to have any parts to replace. I think his mates theory was get another box with linkage and jobs a goodun! From a scrappie!!! The model C has a few upgrades that can be bought to improve it but not this model. Really the box did not need to come out but whilst it was out I explained that it would make good sense to inspect the clutch if he means to get it running for himself. We did, and although it has not gone to the rivets there is not much left to warrant just putting it all back without at least replacing the friction plate. I have priced the items and they are costly so I was wondering if any member on the forum has/was a Corsa man and just happened to have a friction plate gathering dust for this car. It is a 1L DOHC 3 cylinder model with a five speed box. I was thinking, whilst on this thread of helping others, that what if we had a swappsy whereby in instants like this the one asking offers an item in exchange that might be useful to the giver. I am prepared to offer this motorbike/moped silencer in this case. I hope this thread does not break any forum rules and nobody takes offence but I thought it would be nice to try and help the youth of today to try and find an interest that might end up him making a good life for himself.
