Well i'm gobsmacked how helpfull you lot are!
I went to a local fabricators todaay I occasionally buy the odd bit of steel off, although they only deal in heavy stuff they are very helpfull and I buy em a pint or two after a rummage in the offcuts.
As I went in a guy is mig welding 1 inch plates into giant T's So I explain about my new mig and I feel beter welding our trailer 5mm steel with a stick. I commented on the lovley fillet on the right angle nice and smoot and a good size. Nah he says use a mig it's easier gives me a helmet and says watch how our Fred does it.
I was amazed and i think the penny has dropped! He never moved the wire tip from vertical plate to horizontal plate, just kept it at 45 degs into corner and pushed torch along. He told me In dont need to weave on mig as you do with a stick. He explained that there mmig was a big un and I think he said his wire was 2.2mm but as he was doing inch steel if I scale down to my mig with 0.8 wire and the right amps and speed there is no reason why I can't achieve a similar finish on a smaller scale. You what I KNOW he's right so I'm going to have a go in the morning
