help with welding

i need help with my restoration of my old car. I have a portamig 185 with argon shield light and 6mm wire my problem is that when I test weld on old metal the weld is very good and on the new metal its even better (just shows how good the portamig is) but when i try to join the old to the new i can not get a good weld. I blast holes, get spitting and no penetration. I have the mig set to 10 on the gas. wire set at 5 and the amps set to 1 course, 4 fine thank for any help

Hiya Steve! welcome!
Did you put the earth clamp close enough to the spot you want to weld? on a nice clean bit of metal?
Bad earhting causes a lot of spatter!

try turning the wire down, and the lowest amps. Some cars are a real pain, metal is so thin/soft. I try to get the clamp on the welded piece rather than the car. Are you butt or overlap welding?

The bottom lip is normally quite good for an earth, and the door striker on some cars.

guessing your welding the floor?? i had exactly the same problem!! use a shot blaster you can buy a d.i.y kit so long as you've got a compressor or cheaper option use a rust remover before welding that's all i can suggest remove the rust and if it still welds bad and your still blowing holes atleast you can rule out rust lol

thanks for the help. i earthed the car and the new metal and got a much better weld so i am well happy with the advise thanks again
