Help With Stainless & Mig Please

Hi Guys

I've got a stainless steel frying basket (for a chip shop) that needs some attention

The basket has a stainless hook on the end of the basket which has snapped off and I'd like to refit it

The hook is made of stainless rod and the basket is stainless too
The hook is/was held in place by two spot welds

I currently have mild 0.6 wire and argon CO2 mix

Can I use this set-up to reattach the hook to the frying basket, or am I going to cause myself all sorts of problems?

If I can't use what I have, what else should I need to get?

I`d buy a small roll of stainless wire amd pure argon. Your going to want to get pickling paste to clean up the weld when your done, if your doing it as a job it coould cost more than its worth, but then you have some stainless wire for other jobs in the future

As its for food industry you should be using

97.5 Ar 2.5 Co2 or a Ar/He/Co2 mix and a 316 stainless wire

Tig would be much better suited to this application though, where you would need 100% Ar but still the same grade filler wire

As said, you need the right gas and wire to mig it, I'd just take it to the local fab shop and offer one of the lads a drink to tig it on for you (a 5 min job).

You could always drill through the 2 spot welds and reattach using small stainless bolts or rivets as an easier quick fix.

Good thinking there Gordon - I imagine the widely available 'marine' stainless nuts, bolts etc. will satisfy the 'food grade' requirement as well - I think they must be 316?

Yes and no, It depends on the application. There are exceptions, but normally where possible, nuts, bolts, rivets etc arn't used on anything that will come in close contact with food as they can harbour bacteria and other crap.

IIRC A2 grade stainless nuts and bolts are 304 and A4 grade are 316.

Unless you've already taken the job on, don't bother..... you need stainless wire, the right gas.....
It's one of thoose jobs, costs you £10 to do it, and all you get is a free sausage and chips.
