help with potentiometer styles /names

i need a "wheel "style 50k linear pot to try and make a custom dash switch

the normal post /knob style wont really work

needing something more this style , but im unsure what names to search for

That appears to be a preset style, a lot of edge controls are either normal pots mounted so as to use a thumb wheel, or specials.

Those are trimmers, you adjust them by turning the centre hexagon.

whats the differance if those are trimmers?

i was thinking i could glue an axle in the hex hole

Trimmers aren't really built for constant use, they're usually set and left.

trimming pot or side adjustable pot/trimmer. trimming usually implies they are for smaller power ratings, and usually not as robust as a pot as they are really only meant for small adjustments done relatively infrequently.

If you are turning it through 360 degrees regularly (i.e as in a volume knob etc)they may not be up to the job.

You may get 1/4 or 1/2 turn ones, but generally they are 360 degree (1 turn) ones. As rtbcomp said, they are not really intended for heavy use, they are usually found mounted on a circuit board and only adjusted infrequently. If it's on a dash you may need something more substantial.

Are they the type you find on newer cars, I.e push for on and then you can turn either way infinitely? I always wondered how they worked.

yeah the way they seem to work is imagine 2 switches 1 left 1 right to turn up you would switch on right switch hold it, then left switch hold, it release right switch and finally release left and that moves it on 1 increment

Ah, I've used similar in industrial applications. You generally have 2 channels 90 or 180 deg out of phase, and the inverter or plc can calculate the direction from that. Do these do something similar? I'm amazed they are so small ( I suppose I shouldn't be really )

Try to Modify a normal pot to fit through the centre of the thumb wheel there are some small pot available

Usually 270 degrees unless a 'servo pot' which can turn continually
