Yes, been there - done that.
When I first started I doubted my ability rather than the equipment. Got there in the end.
The MIG was out again at the weekend!!! Always something with an old car!!!

auto helmet will help in no small measure. I can see thru mine well enough in my dingy garage which only has a modest strip light. there are occasional bargains on ebay..sometimes a 3m or optrel mask comes up...well worth it.

Ah, now I see the problem with the picture. The p0rn filter here will not allow pictures with the word 'penetration' in the title. I'll have to wait until I get home to see these filthy dirty pictures of welds.

Mmm, all these problems with cannister gas. I bought some cannisters and a reg with my gasless Clarke 151en and I will try it eventually. At the moment though the gasless is ok for me. I know a lot of people say gas is much better, but apart from a bit of smoke and brown stuff (easy to remove with a wire brush) it's fine for me so far.
I think that if i try the gas, and find it a 'revelation' to use then I'll have to go the whole hog and give BOC a ring.

Oxy/acetylene gas welding is the easist way to weld thin sheet, although it can warp the sheets a little bit.
..I am not sure if you are even allowed to store Oxygen and/or Acetylene gas bottles at domestic premises anymore but it would explain the rise of the Mig welders for the same job.
