Hi All
You can see I'm new on here, so I'll give a little bit of my background / situation - I use to be a mechanic (so welded lots of rusty cars) then went on to be an CNC engineer (a few career changes, I get bored quite easily)
But due to life, work and a few other things I haven't picked up a welder for about 14 years!
Now I'm wanting a new gate, so I've done a drawing (as attached), I have a few questions / looking for opinions on the following (just feel a bit out of touch and could do with a bit of help):
1. I found my old welder at the back of the shed today and it appears to work (ish), I have lost my face mask so had to just test it worked while covering with my hand. It is an old SIP migmate with a range of 35A to 100A. This was fine for car body repairs, but am I right in thinking that I'll need a more powerful welder to do the connections as per my design?
2. I was originally thinking of using hammered box section (from NVF) and flat to try and give the gate a more aged feel (it's going on a early 18th century house), has anyone used the Hammered sections? Do they look any good or is normal SHS the way to go?
3. I presume for gate making like this one, that people make up jigs / template for the infills to hold in place while tacking on?
4. As above I need a new mask, has anyone bought something like the SIP Meteor 2300 (Toolstation)b or from Amazon, there is one made by Tacklife! at £42. Any good for a DIYer like me?
5. Any design comments or input on the design I've drawn?
Many thanks Gav
