the only advantage u will gain is a simple push of the buttons to stop and start rather than turn a switch

hmm, so perhaps i should return my DOLs!
Although i have the safety switches installed, they offer me little use (just ensure doors are closed etc). All i want is a switch, ideally one with a 'press to stop' type feature similar to what is currently installed on the tools so i can knock them off with my knee if required.
I got this DOL from Screwfix. I don't think it even has an overload on it.... so its just an expensive switch?!

Yes that will need an overload. If you want a "press to stop" then DOL is the way to go.

With normal switches if you have a power cut your machine will go off and will also restart when the power comes back on. With a DOL the machine won't restart unless you push On again.
The power cut aspect of a normal switch is of no real concern to me - I can live with that.

You may be able to replace the button with a mushroom headed one. If it were me I would personally keep the dol starter as you can always add the limit switches, door switches at a later date if you want, as well as overloads etc.
I wouldn't dismiss the no volt release thing, it's easy to say you won't need it but it's an extra layer of safety, the day you have your fingers in there and it restarts unexpectedly will be the day you wish you had it fitted (I know it's 99.99% certain not to happen but why not make it as Safe as possible?)

Weather or not you can do this with your screwfix one i do not know. Some use the buttons on the front to mechanically operate the contactor and trip the overload to stop. Others use NO NC switches that you wire in to operate the contactor.
Both can operate with the remote stop it sounds like you require.
Personally if you feel this machine may :-

Sorry to perhaps go back a step, but I was reading through the comments again trying to peace it all together. Chris; your original proposal sounds like the ideal situation for me - using the DOL but having the existing 'press to stop' switches, in good positions and good quality as my 'user switches'.
Any advise on how I would wire this arrangement? I have 4 pin sockets from my inverter - into DOL (4 wires in and 4 out) - into my 'press to stop'.... but no idea what to do with that part. I have photos at the start of the thread.
But then to play devils advocate, if the above works, why not just put in a 4pole switch instead of the DOL (other than the power cut situation).

Just to clarify when you say Inverter, do you mean a phase converter such as machine mart or transwave sell. (Largish heavy box)
Normally a Inverter is a small electronic box with a display so you can alter the supply frequency to a motor to alter speed.
Will post up a diagram for your switches asap.

As advise above.
In this situation you can keep it simple.
Just wire all your switches in series, so one long line going through your NC stops.(so any push breaks the circuit)
And your starts if you want more that one in parallel NO starts.(so any push makes the circuit)

A wiring diagram would be very useful! Thank you for all the help. I am pretty 'switched on' with normal 240V, but this is the first time I've looked at 3 phase and its causing me much confusion! Not just a case of wiring up a plug like I thought it would be haha

If you are only using One machine at a time you could put an appliance input socket on each machine, then all you need is one lead and swap the lead between machines, instead of a lead on each.
