Help wanted --small turning job

Hi All ,
I am need of a small turning job to fix the "new " dumbirons on my chassis rebuild see "New Project Landrover on this forum,the $£itpart dumb iron replacements have a 16mm hole for a 9/16" bolt = 14.3 mm, what I need to centre up a replacement is a pair of lipped washers [for want of a better description]so I can grind off and weld replace with the right size as per the pic, can anyone help please? Help take the DUMB out of the dumbiron.
Would it be worth contacting Britpart to point out the discrapency of the part?!

I would advise them of the discrepancy and ask them if they will fix it for you.

If you find you still need them done im in Kent and run a full machine shop facilities. I'm a toolmaker by trade so your assured of getting the correct job first time round.

By rights the part should be able to do the job you need, You might find they have modernised the part a bit as per your hole. Seems pretty common these days.

Ive done loads of dumb irons changes in the 17/18 years that ive been messing about with landrovers/ rangerovers as been trialing / racing (compsafari) landrovers/rangerovers and space frames,,
Landrovers are just one big kit of parts ,, made to be repaired in fields and so on so precision is not a part of them,,

Hi How did you go about fixing it?, the bolts are a rattling fit in the holes so the car would bang about like crazy even on the road,the holes on the rotten ones are a sliding fit.

I take it you are refuiring to where the spring hanger goes through?? if so are you sure that the springhanger shaft is not worn a bit as well??

No wear on bolt, it is a good sliding fit in old dumbiron,the hole in the new item is 1.6/8mm bigger!

Hi , not sure then as all the ones ive fitted have had some play in the holes
? What about putting some plain washers ether side and welding them to the chassis , just jack up the chassis put bolts through washers and chassis let them settle and tighten them up then weld them in place if you use 2/3mm washers and some smaller ones on the shackle bottom to pack out the space between the shackle and the spring,,

Does the shackle rotate on the bolt ? If so it would be stronger supported all the way along it's length with a sleeve than just on the thickness of two washers at each end. If it clamps the metal in the bush leaving the rubber to flex it should be alright to do it but the bolts will have to be VFT to not oval the holes if you are using the vehicle off road.

Don't centre the new washers over the large holes in the dumb iron. Set them so there is maximum bearing on both dumb iron hole and washer, when the weight is on the springs.
If you centre the washer they will wear away quickly in the maximum load position, i.e. the top of the hole.

Nice one Stormin! I hadnt thought of that,I have made some new washers with a hole saw out of 6mm and 5 mm plate, the chassis is upside down at the moment on its spit so I will grind off the offending washers ,put a bolt thru let it sit on the top of the hole with the washers fitted and then weld them in postion, thanks again , this is a good forum for help , cheers

If he hadn't already welded them on I'd have suggested returning them, but it's a bit late for that now.
I'm sure he won't make the same mistake again.
