Have downloaded some photo's from camera to photo's on Windows 11, now wish to transfer some to desktop. In the past it was an easy drag and drop, now when I click on any image an icon appears in the middle of the image. The icon is a circle with a diagonal slash, similar to the national speed limit sign. Now whilst I can drag the image it fails to drop on to desktop. Any ideas as to what has happened, my pc is behaving oddly at the moment in other areas and seems slower than normal.

when you click on an image are you trying to open said pic to view it ?
what it could be is that the file is a short cut as drag and drop failed to send the files over to the pc from the camera
and thats why you have that circle and line across it as the action is not permitted as the file isnt there

I don't use Win 11 at the moment but like many Win renditions, most similar under the hood.
Are you confident is exploring Win 11, possibly the registry?,
First thing first, if running a wireless mouse and you haven't done so recently, change the battery.
Below is by no means a complete lists of " try's " but the spy geek in me likes a good mole hunt or in this case "mouse".
Given that you said your PC is acting funny or has slowed the issue could well be a 3rd party app that's the culprit, more of that a bit later.
First you need to end any mouse tasks especially drags and drops as when one has failed the rest will.
Press Win Key + E Key at same time, left click any files found and press the escape key, this won't fix the issue as such but does clear the board so to speak.
It could be you mouse settings/sensitivities have been changed, this means delving into the registry, easy enough if confident but maybe a last resort.
Another try, from the elevated command prompt as an administrator run a SFC scan, so command prompt, then type, sfc /scannow then press enter key, ( Please note space after the letters "sfc" and all lower case ), let the scan do its thing and it may take a time, if it finds anything corrupted it repairs.
If it doesn't find anything the next scan is a DISM scan, it is very similar to the above procedure but more to it, I can write about it or you can just look it up.
You could cut to the chase and before doing any of the above, ( except the mouse battery and ending all drag and drop tasks ), is disable all 3rd party Apps.
It's a little convoluted to write up, plenty of online help out there on the subject but basically by checking boxes you hide all MS apps/programs and "disabled" all 3rd party aps.
This way, having hid and disabled all, drag and drop should now work, now the hunt is on for the 3rd party culprit.
You could have many 3rd party apps and you will have to disable them one by one and each time try drag and drop and if it fails end the task, don't envy you, long and a trek but you will find the culprit.
Hopefully you don't have many 3rd party apps on your system.
Thanks for replies, still non the wiser. Have tried moving pic to clipboard, but it does not even go there. No new third party apps though microsoft is always updating/buggering up my system. Not capable of any in depth investigations myself. I'll have to call in some local pc guru to check out my system.
I have always hated windows 10 and 11, give me win98 or XP! Hate Microsoft. (now awaiting to be arrested for hate speech). May look to joining some local classes to learn about other operating sytems.

It doesn't have to be a new 3rd party app, an outdated one will do it.

I think your issue is with the Photos app. The app saves things in the Pictures > Saved Pictures folder, so if you look in there with file explorer you should be able to see your photos and copy them if you wish.
I think that may be the answer. Never had to do this before, whilst on the photo's app I moved each photo to the pictures folder and then went into pictures and was able to drag/drop to desktop. Problem solved for the moment, still hate, hate, hate Windows 11 though.

i always liked me but was forced up to xp though i did get used to it i upgraded to win 7 prefer that version
windows 8 tabbed i hate with a vengence its probably why i dont like win10/11 for the same reason i dont like tab mode
even if i changed the view with win 10/11 windows would change it back to how they want it and i really cant be bothered rechanging it back again every time
so id rather not install it
im not an apple user either but dont like its base set either

I sympathise , I still have similar problems , MS has wrecked what was a useful picture down load & storage etc. by demanding you tie everything back to their programmes , If you use OneNote it will be even more frustrating as they try to maximise the monetary gain aspects from using their products.

There are numerous problems with the Photos application in Windows 11. Mine was really badly goosed to the point where it would cause blue screens. I ended up removing it with the (free) de bloating tool from Github and I removed a ton of other junk as well like the Xbox framework etc. PC now much faster as a nice side effect. It does it all in Powershell and provides a nice GUI for easy of use.
By removing the Photos app you will remove the file associations thus reverting back to Windows Explorer as the default. Much better. You might want a different application to manipulate or catalogue your photos, I use Lightroom Classic, mainly cos I have a subscription for my son’s Uni course, but other apps are available such as GIMP etc.
There is also a tip, which I’m testing, to install win-11 fresh as a minimal install. Just by selecting English World, rather than UK, USA etc. Might be worth a clean installation without all the crapware anyway. Just a thought.
